There is obviously something rotten on the Northern Beaches. We have lost 4 of our last 5, mainly against teams we should be putting away. Our front row and bench are not aiming up at all with King being the only exception. Perry has been absolutely useless, I wouldn't even have him as 18th man at the moment. Joey G hasn't really offered anything at all this season, and Bailey..No real need to talk about Bailey. Cherry-Evans was 18th man in case Lyon didn't pass fit, blood him, now. Hodkinson has been terrible lately, pretty much since after City v Country, with the exception of 2 field goals and a nice chip v Canberra.

1 Farrar 2 Robertson 3 Matai 4 Lyon 5 Williams (Run hard or piss off)
6 Foran 7 Daly Cherry-Evans
8 King 9 Ballin 10 Brent Kite
11 Watmough 12 Rodney 13 Stewart

Bench : 14 Matt Cross 15 George Rose 16 Darcy Lussick 17 Josh Perry

Vic Mauro is playing really well for Sunny Coast at the moment too. Whare, Hoppa, Buhrer all putting pressure for a gig also.

Something sure does need to change..... but we all know nothing will.

As good a coach as Des is, if last year is anything to go by, he likes to stick with the same group of players regardless of whether they're winning or not. As if changing the side around and dropping underperforming players was some kind of an admission that he got it wrong.

Over the 3 years from 2006 to 2008, they developed a increasingly successful style of play that revolved around Orford, Watmough and Brett Stewart. Once Brett got suspended/injured last year, Des tried to maintain that same style using Robbo as the fullback. After only a handfull of games it was obvious to just about everyone except Des, Robbo wasn't up to it. However in true Des fashion, he stuck with him until Brett returned late in the season. Unfortunately, short on both match fitness and confidence he had little impact.

After a fine 2008, Matt Orford clearly struggled with fitness and injuries (and Robbo at fullback) and throughout 2009 looked to have reached the point where he could no longer keep pace with the NRL. Thus a juicy ESL contract was a fitting reward for a fine career.

So... here we are in 2010 and they still seem to be trying to play the same way, even though Orford's gone and Stewart is still injured. Watmough who had built up a good combination with Orford, now looks a shadow of the player he was less than 12 months ago.

They have become far too predictable..... hitting it up, usually one out before passing along the backline in the often vain hope that Lyon, Matai or Glenn Stewart will conjure something from nothing. The exception is when they find themselves inside the opposition 20m line and they run their one and only backline move. Which of course by now, rarely fools anyone.

With rookie halves, the one thing they absolutely must do is make good metres... which means more often than not, winning the forward battle. This isn't happening. Brent Kite for some years now and Josh Perry this year, look stale and in need of a new club. Josh has got himself an ESL contract and good luck to him, He was fantastic for us in 2008 and a big part of why they won it. Unfortunately his heart just doesn't seem in it now. As for Kite, apart from the memorable 2008 GF, I can't recall too many standout performances over the past few seasons.

It's usually acknowledged these days, the #1 #6 #7 and #9 are crucial to a teams success. In only his 3rd season as a starter in first grade, Ballin is our most experienced player of that group. Both Ben Farrar and Kieron Foran are playing their first full seasons in the top grade and Hodkinson is on Debut. So it's perhaps little wonder their losing! Ballin needs to have a far greater playmaking role and only when they've made good metres up the centre should he give it to the halves. He's a good player and could easily handle the extra responsibility.

Having said all that, they are still a chance of making the finals but only if Des can bring himself to make some changes. Cherry-Evans needs to get some game time at least from the bench. Both Perry and Hodkinson can finish up their time on the Sunshine Coast. Shift Foran to #7, Farrar to #6 and bring Hoppa into #1. I'd also try Whare on the wing and shift T-Rex to the bench, he needs to learn to hit the line harder. He has improved a great deal this year but this particular aspect of his game, lets him down.

So for what it's worth...

Hoppa, Robertson, Matai, Lyon, Whare, Farrar, Foran, Stewart, Watmough, Rodney, King, Ballin, Cross. Res. Rose, Gulavao, Williams & Cherry-Evans.

I was in the glass half full camp before that loss on the weekend, certainly changed my tune now. As I said in another thread, I think the front row is our biggest let down but the options are slim.

Hopoate
Williams
Lyon
Matai
Robertson
Foran
Cherry-Evans
King
Ballin
Kite
Rodney
Watmough
Stewart

Farrar
Cross
Rose
Galuvao

That would do me.

Perry has to go now, Cross isn't the best but he puts in.
I think Hopoate could add a bit if that x factor missing with Snake out. Farrar has been good an getting safer but he offers very little in attack. Put Farrar on the bench but could swap him with Williams, either one would be an impact player for different reasons.
DCE in for the sake of change, I'm not sure if he's ready but it's wrth a shot.

I was so disappointed with Hodko kicking options and he made a few terrible errors..

The amount of kicks that find either fullback or winger on the full, he seldom takes the line on and that forward pass on the first tackle on Friday night was park footy quality..

I was one who was disappointed to see Perry sign elsewhere, that has changed, he showed no effort what so ever...

I think DCE will bring in a very much needed enthusiasm, put Hodko back to Qld cup..

Fair but I disagree with Joe. When he gets on he runs straight and hard, that cannot be said about some of the other forwards. Des just does not give him that much game time for some reason. I would keep him in the 17 and give him more time.

Although (as with everyone else) I know it will never happen as we know Des loves to stick loyal:
1. Hopoate
2. Robertson
3. Matai
4. Lyon
5. Whare (get him exposure to more 1st grade for when he replaces Matai next season)
6. Foran
7. DCE
8. King
9. Ballin
10. Kite (maybe getting the starting spot back will spark him)
11. Watmough
12. Rodney
13. Stewart

14. Cross
15. Farrar
16. Gulavao
17. Perry (last chance)

So let me get this straight beaver, your gonna drop our best player this year (T-rex) and not really change our forwards except getting rid of rose for cross. I dont know why you are giving Perry a last chance he is only here till the end of the season and he is looking like he has his newcastle form back.

I do agree with taking bailey out and bringing in DCE at least, but I am glad your not selecting the team.

I think Perry needs a few weeks off, and Maybe starting Rose or Kite.

Unfortunately Dessie wont change anyone, especially bringing in any young forwards, look how he used Buhrer earlier in the year- was lucky to get 10 minutes over 3 weeks.

You're completely right on the Rose point. I completely forgot about big George. He would be in any squad for sure. So I'd take Perry out and have Rose in.
Now, as we're handing out critiques on each other, if you think Tony Williams is the best Manly player this year, then I'm glad you're not picking the team !!
Fair enough he's scored a couple of good tries and makes the occassional big run, but for the most part, he lackes enthusiasm and just lopes the ball back. He has NO speed either. As they say, you can't manufacture speed.
For a bloke of his size he should contribute a lot more than he does. But I don't want to turn this into a Willams bashathon.
The point i want to make is that he is nowhere near the best player for Manly this year. How about Glenn Stewart, Jamie Lyon or Matt Ballin for starters??
I left Rose out as a mistake as I forgot plain and simple. But to call Williams the best player we've had this year.....please.
Put it to any supporter and I'd be AMAZED if anyone agreed with WIliams being Manly's best.

Des has named Perry to start, Hodkinson at 7, Bailey on the bench, Cherry-Evans not on the bench.

ok T-rex maybe not best, but definitely most improved if we are handing out trophies.

I certainly wouldn't be dropping him, he is our best attacking asset when combined with killer and deserves his place on the wing at the moment.

I cant believe Perry has been named in the starting line up, not sure what he would need to do to be dropped - maybe sleep with Dessies wife or something.

Well we'll have to agree to disagree on Williams.

As for Perry sleeping with Dessie's missus - he has form so that might have to do it !!:sarcasm:

If Josh Perry was ever going to put in a big performance... it's this weekend. The spotlight is well and truly on him now and another... quiet (being kind) performance should signal a move North to the Sunshine Coast.
