So as many of you know I love doing plenty of analyses on the squad.

The NRL has announced that top grade squads will consist of 30 players, with at least 3 'rookie contracted players' added on, not sure what constitutes a rookie contract over a top grade one though.

With these calculated totals we have 37 on the roster so far, and there could possible be even more. I can't recall a time when we had this many players in the top grade squad, and it will be great for depth/injuries.

So far with confirmed signings it looks like our squad will be this;

Confirmed So Far (37):

Jesse Arthars (Fullback/Wing/Centre)

Dean Britt (Second Row/Lock/Prop)

George Burgess (Prop)

Sam Burgess (Lock/Second Row/Prop)

Tom Burgess (Prop)

Braidon Burns (Centre/Wing/Fullback)

Jason Clark (Lock/Prop/Second Row)

Damien Cook (Hooker/Fullback/Five-Eighth)

Josh Cook (Hooker)

Angus Crichton (Second Row/Centre/Lock)

Adam Doueihi (Five-Eighth/Halfback/Centre)

Robbie Farah (Hooker/Halfback)

Tyrell Fuimaono (Second Row/Centre)

Dane Gagai (Centre/Wing/Fullback)

Jacob Gagan (Wing/Centre)

Campbell Graham (Centre/Wing)

Dean Hawkins (Halfback/Five-Eighth)

Mawene Hiroti (Wing/Centre)

Hymel Hunt (Centre/Wing)

Greg Inglis (Centre/Fullback/Five-Eighth)

Robert Jennings (Centre/Wing)

Alex Johnston (Fullback/Wing)

Sam Johnstone (Prop)

Richie Kennar (Wing/Centre)

Jesse Martin (Lock/Hooker)

Cameron Murray (Lock/Second Row)

Zane Musgrove (Prop)

Mark Nicholls (Prop)

Adam Reynolds (Halfback)

Ky Rodwell (Prop)

John Sutton (Second Row/Five-Eighth/Lock)

Lucky Ta'avale (Second Row/Prop/Lock)

Siosifa Talakai (Second Row/Centre)

Tyrone William Langi Taukamo (Centre/Wing)

Connor Tracey (Halfback)

Kyle Turner (Prop/Second Row/Lock)

Cody Walker (Five-Eighth/Fullback/Halfback)

Centre: 12
Five-Eighth: 6
Halfback: 6
Prop: 11

Do tell me if I've forgotten anyone's position so I can add it to this.

So far I'm pretty damn happy with that.

This was great brother we need more posts from you. I did a brief depth analysis in another thread but I think it would be awesome for someone to go into detail about it. Like find out everyone's preferred positions etc. I don't even know if half of the outside backs are natural wingers or centres. I think this is important as we saw hymel hunt on the wing this year and he wasn't too crash hot. Same as Goodwin.

Thanks mate. Well I know for a fact this list is stretching it a bit but I figure if they can play a position well why not? For example Burns has played on the wing but he's a centre who eventually wants to play fullback (which I believe he's played for the Bears).

i think it’s actually 36 in top squad
30 + 6 Development players (that the club would need to seek NRL permission to play NRL next year)

I think Douehi & Sam Johnson will be in top 30
With the other youngsters the 6 development players maybe.

Still think both Tracey & Farah should be released

Yeah well structurally I heard its 30 in the top squad plus you need at least 5 development players, but Richo said we'd have 36 in the squad so we're on the right track there.

I'm pretty sure the Farah rumours are just that but I haven't heard anything about Tracey. Hope the kid gets some gametime with the Bears this year though.

I 180% understand releasing Farah but I reckon we've gotta give Tracey 1 last chance. We've kept him this long may as well try him out. After this contract though if he hasn't proved himself we shouldn't resign him. We didn't resign gosiewski because of his injury record as well.

Thinking about our 2018 top 17 and I'm starting to warm up to the idea of Sam playing at second row IF fuimaono is playing centre. I'm thinking a lineup like this may be the best side we can field.

1. GI
2. AJ
3. Gagai
4. Fuimaono
5.Graham/kennar/burns/Jennings
6. Walker
7. Reynolds
8. Tom Burgess
9. Cook/Farah
10. Musgrove
11. Surgess
12. Crichton
13. Murray

14. Farah/cook
15. George Burgess
16. Nicholls
17. Sutton

If I was the coach though I would be dropping one of Farah/cook for another second rower which should be talakai as an impact player.

Great thread R95! Love your insights, always worth a read.
Didn't know Burns played at fullback for the bears? Interesting.
Burns is primed for a big year I reckon
Thanks mate. I'm pretty sure I saw him named there for a couple games. He's said he wants to play there eventually I believe.

Anyway here's my preferred 17 so far:

1. Greg Inglis
2. Alex Johnston
3. Hymel Hunt
4. Dane Gagai
5. Robert Jennings/Campbell Graham
6. Cody Walker
7. Adam Reynolds
8. Tom Burgess
9. Damien Cook
10. Zane Musgrove
11. Sam Burgess
12. Angus Crichton
13. Cam Murray

14. John Sutton
15. Tyrell Fuimaono
16. George Burgess
17. Kyle Turner/Dean Britt/Mark Nicholls/Jason Clark

Based on the current confirmed squad I think that’s probably the best line up.

Ideally would have liked to see another quality prop at 17. (Alex Walmsley from St Helens would be great)

Also another Centre or GI to centre with a fullback coming in.(Latrell Mitchell if they need to make room for Cronk would be good)

Obviously if we could have landed Cronk in the halves then top shelf.

Opportunity for some young guys to step up next year

Depth in a squad fellas actually equates to having X amount of players that have proven themselves to produce quality performances consistently from one season to the next and replacements that have proven themselves of high quality when called upon and players of proven versatility.
Not hopes and prayers!

Wouldn't depth equate to the amount of players we have? Doesn't matter if they have first grade experience or not. Remember 2014 when 3 rookies forced their way into our 17 and another one replaced one of our most experienced players in the Grand Final?

I own and run a Sports Rehabilitation Company,I could employ 47 inexperienced employees as it is I employ 34 experienced employees with proven work histories in this field.
That is what it's about depth in experience and proven work history.
Depth in numbers equates to zero, depth in experience equates to success!

I don't believe this at all. Just because someone is experienced doesn't make them better at a job. In fact I've worked at quite a few jobs where the experienced people are bored, lazy and just plain depressing. Whereas the new people are always willing to learn and most of the time give out more productivity than the experienced people. Just because you've been around longer doesn't mean you're better at something. In fact it's more likely that you're probably getting bored of that certain thing.

You have definitely been associated with the wrong people and I suggest that you need to be educated in Business Management.

Ahh well I'm in my final year of business administration at Macquarie university and I can honestly tell you that nothing I have learned there has resulted in experience=success. There is a combination of things that lead to success. You need a mix of youth and experience I believe and it's especially apparent when we're talking about a sporting team.
