Souths after Matthew Johns

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have Matthew Johns in their sights as they begin recruitment for their return to the NRL Premiership next year. Johns has been granted a release from Wigan to return to Australia because of family considerations.
And his manager, John Fordham, began negotiations with the Rabbitohs on Tuesday.
Souths’ coach Craig Coleman explained: “Matty Johns is a not only a very good player. He has also been a strong supporter of Souths and he comes from a working-class background as the son of a coalminer. He’s the type of player we’re interested in signing.”
Fordham also held talks with Chris Anderson, who will coach the Sharks next season, before Anderson left for New Zealand with the Australian Test team.
A third, unnamed, club is also said to be interested in Johns’ services.

I think Matthew Johns is a player Souths can build a quality side around. If you had the choice where would you rather go Souths or the Sharks?

There was an article in the Newcastle Herald the other day linking several Knights players to Souths. Darren Albert, Glen Grief, Matt Johns and some of the first div players were all said to be putting out feelers.

Matt Johns is a great student of the game. There were stories years ago about how he and Andrew would watch any games that were on TV and if they saw anything happen in the game which was new or interesting they would ring each other up and discuss it for hours, then they would go out and practice doing whatever they had seen. The two boys are supposed to have spent hours analysing the kicking game of Ricky Stuart and modelling their play on his.
Matty would be a great asset for any side in the same off the field way that Andrew is at Newcastle. That is, input into tactics and style of play.
He would be a very good foundation member of a team.

Seems pretty certain that Matthew Johns is going to the Sharks. But I still hope we can snare him because he will be a real leader on and off the field - that's what you need to get started.
Cheers
