Rabbits make bold move for Moltzen
Posted on May 13, 2011
Wests Tigers utility Tim Moltzen has surged from nowhere to become South Sydney’s top playmaking target for next year.
The versatile Country rep player is all the rage at Redfern because he can cover for fullback Rhys Wesser, who is expected to be released, and Parramatta-bound halfback Chris Sandow.
Moltzen is contracted to the Tigers for another year, but that didn’t stop desperate Rabbitohs officials making an approach to the 22-year-old’s management this week.
Ironically, Moltzen faces his new suitors at ANZ Stadium tomorrow night. He would prefer to be lining up at halfback, but can’t dislodge Robert Lui from the scrumbase and has been shifted to the centres.
With young gun No. 7 Jacob Miller also at Concord, the Tigers are willing to entertain an early release as they strive to keep a host of top young forwards and finalise a deal for Storm superstar Adam Blair.
As reported this week, CEO Stephen Humphreys has granted veteran duo Bryce Gibbs and Liam Fulton permission to negotiate elsewhere after an approach from their agent Daryl Mather nearly two months ago. Gibbs and Fulton have been in business together off the field for the past five years and they want to keep playing alongside one another.
Mather met with Cronulla recently and Melbourne could also come into calculations for Gibbs, who is getting better with age.
But Humphreys is adamant both players will be accommodated next year should they not strike a deal with a rival club.

If Moltzen is on the market, expect more clubs than Souths to chase him. Good luck if he can get the money. He is a fine player.

He's not really 'on the market'. But the part that says "With young gun No. 7 Jacob Miller also at Concord, the Tigers are willing to entertain an early release as they strive to keep a host of top young forwards and finalise a deal for Storm superstar Adam Blair" is really just a way of saying he's on the market...

f**k I'd hate to see him running around in a Souffs jersey. Anyone but them.

He might as well move on as he wont get past Lui in his preferred halfback role whilst ever Teflon's there.

Basically- if Moltzen stays at WT it is utility player on interchange mostly, or lok elsewhere for a halfback slot. I think I'd be looking elsewhere to play in a position I wanted to play in rather than stay and 'make do'.

Oh but... stay on as a utility at WT and he just might get another run in a Country jersey one day!

interesting times. I wonder if this potential 'shedding' of established players (Gibbs, Fulton, Payten, Moltzen- thats 1/3 of the starting lineup) means Teflon has used the argument its the players that have not performed for me and its time for new blood. I'm not against the change of blood as we have to try to keep the up and comers- Dywer, Murdoch-Masala, Woods, Fifita etc.

If he stays, I think Molzen might be set to follow in the footsteps of Fitzy and Ryan one day and be Shine's bench bitch coming on each week with two minutes to go....

I reckon Sharks will take Moltzen. They'll have more cash in the cap to offer him. Expect him to get a ridiculous offer from them over the coming months.

And play him at 7? Or 6? How is Wade Graham going at 7?

I think people are being pretty harsh on Moltzen as he is coming back from a serious injury and has had to play three different positions since he came back. Not ideal. I think he will be going fine by the end of the year, and there is always the chance that Lui will be injured again before the end of the year (he's still young and won't get 100 percent resilient for a few years). I'd try to keep onto him if possible.

He is not a centre, Not a fullback.... He has a far better 6 & 7 in front of him- be nice to keep him but rather lose him than Lui ....

I can't see either leaving. The Tigers don't have sufficient quality backs to let either leave.

Moltzen after Marshall, Lawrence and Lui is our best attacker. Besides Ayshord, the other backs are either at the wrong ends of their careers or probably will lose out to a 20s player.

Lui
Marshall
Lawrence
Moltzen
Ayshford
