Spirits Thread

Since FFB has beer and wine threads, why not a spirits thread.

For me, spirits are a bit of a treat as I am a 99.5% beer drinker.

I was prompted to start this thread after having probably the most overrated/overpriced and disgustingly tasting spirit in my life - Crystal Head Vodka.

It was suggested that this be drunk straight with ice - no mixers - which I did. On reflection, no mixer could have possibly disguised the taste of what could be only described as an industrial paint stripper.

The only redeeming feature is the nice bottle, but that's marketing for you!

Grey goose vodka is nice

Best spirit I ever had was some dimple my uncle brought out one Xmas

He had had it for twenty years ( no idea how old it was when bottled) but damn it was smooth ! Able to drink it straight on ice ( and I don't really like scotch )

Dimple is great.

Ftr, whiskeys don't improve with age once they are taken out of the barrel. It's the tenins in the oak barrel that improve the taste of the whiskey over time.

ATM my favourite spirits are as follows, in no particular order.

Bombay Sapphire Gin - ice and a dash of good quality tonic water.

Cointreau - ice only.

Jack Daniels - Gentleman Jack version.

Wild Turkey.

Now for the bad news....

I am no fan of Scotch, particularly the cheaper versions. It only gets as far as my throat then I gag and everything in my stomach comes up.

Bundaberg Rum - the archetypical Queensland bogan spirit that leaves that nasty morning after taste. Only the more expensive liqueur versions are drinkable....only just.

After a bad teenage experience, anything with aniseed in it. Ouzo, Pernod....etc. I can detect Ouzo at 100 paces after all these years.

Vodka is for androtops or metro swag merkins who can't handle real spirits like the Dugan.

My regular is Canadian club

If I want to spend a bit more it's wild turkey, Canadian club 12 years or jack Daniels

If I am buying duty free it's Canadian club 18 year, wild turkey rare breed or gentleman jack.

I'll normally have my spirits with coke zero, I'll have my Canadian with a wedge of lime.

I will sometimes go on the rocks with higher quality American whisky. But I normally mix them Strong anyway usually 1/3 spirit 2/3 coke.

As has already been said, he could have had it in the bottle for 100 years and it would have tasted the same as the day it was bottled. I do think the mind plays a role when sampling older or more expensive beverages though.

Mostly correct...but that ABV often does slowly decrease, which can make it appear smoother. Dimple is easily the best blended whiskey though so it doesn't need much more smoothness.

Anyway, love scotch and bourbon...Laphroiag, Glenfiddich, Bruichladdich, Glenmorangie, Glenfarclas in particular. Mostly Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve for bourbon. Jack Daniels for when I feel like getting pissed. Gin is my go to white spirit, Hendricks, Tanqueray mostly.

I've become a fan of Coke Zero over the past few years. Normal Coke tastes too syrupy....almost sickly. Diet Coke is an abomination.

I got some CC 20 year old. That shit needs no mixer. Holy f**k is it smooth, and a bargain (relatively speaking when compared to scotch) at about $80

Jameson for my "every day" spirit. Goes well straight or with a mixer

Glenmorangie 18yo is my "special occasion" spirit. Stuff is mothers milk

Bundy Red is my "let's get f**ked up" spirit

Spirits are for getting smashed as quickly as possible. Canadian Club, Johnnie Walker, Bundy etc with coke are the go-to. Big fan of American Honey, Maker's Mark and Licor 43, plus Bacardi Oakheart. Taste is probably in my arse though given how I drink it.

Never done tequila, can't do much with vodka these days after bad experiences.

American Honey

Both usually with coke. Never been able to drink it straight unless it's shots.

And don't mind the odd vodka and red bull.
