Not sure if there is a thread about this already, if so can you link it below. IF NOT:

I am looking at buying sports ears premium so I can use it when I am at the footy. My question is what are they like and how well do they work?

Thanks.

The quality is really good. I only have mine on the referee's when im at the games. I don't need commentators to annoy and tell me what to think.

They kick in just as the both teams get on the field and turn off at half time and again when the players are on the field for the second half.

The only problem i found that is the clip on the unit is shit so don't clip it to your waist or anything.

Quality wise, very professional, very strong voices coming from the refs during the whole game and some funny conversations go on between the refs. Sometimes the crowd will be picked up on the referees microphones though but the voices of the referees come over it.

Thanks for that input, I think I might get one, I have three games in a row coming up and I like the idea, I would still get the $80 one just to have it there...and does the sports ears have a range on them. For example is it possible to listen to them whilst not at the ground or it the receiver if you know only at the ground?

The only problem I've had with SportsEars is that sometimes the mix is a bit off and you'll still get the commentators bleeding into the refs feed.

Other than that they are excellent.

Totally worth it for Steve Lyons and maybe sometimes Jason Robinson.

The others, no. Especially Tony Archer.

Not quite sure mate, i have never tried to use during a game while not being at the ground.

It double's up as an FM radio though.

Very handy. I generally follow the commentary more than the refs but if something big like a report, VR decision or potential bin or sending is pending, I'll flick to refs.

Definitely improves the experience at the ground IMO, particularly if you're by yourself.

seems you can do it yourself, without the $45 price tag.

"Alternatively if you don't feel confident hacking a cheap-store receiver, you can even buy a receiver that covers the frequency in question (and more) for less than the Sports Ears product. Dick Smith for example still carries an TV-audio receiver, catalogue number A-4289 ($29.98 - appears to be a Digitor branded Tecsun). Over the years they have carried a number of similar units, I have an older model which is essentially identical internally, you often see them at garage sales or ham radio trash and treasure days for about $5."

Bloody excellent, I love em, I bought some in 05 (then upgraded to premium in 09) and use them for every game since. I listen to the commentators and refs, its good to get both perspectives, or pick up things you may have missed.

Sometimes when leaving the ground early (if its a thrashing) I lef them on, and can hear the commentary up to about 100m or so from the ground, then it gets all staticy and drops out.

Heard some funny stuff on the refs mikes, Paul Ra to Craig Smith "What you been doing for the last year mate?", Smith : "Nothing, just sitting on the couch watching DVD's!" And after that massive prep he did something like 15 hitups for 150m for Newcastle.

Yep, definately worth while although pricing a bit excessive. Anyone at AAMI last week may have heard this gem...ref - "Adam (Blair) you need to be careful with the downtowns mate" BLAIR: "Whats a downtown?"

I love them, if i forget to take them to a game i feel ripped off. I prefer the basic version though, be f**ked if I want to listen to Gordon Tallis's bullshit in my ears for 80 mins,my advice just get the basic set Az.

im on my 3rd set........... I kept dropping my first pair in a drunken stupour whenever we would score and it ended up smashing on the concrete, my 2nd pair didn't last 5 mins, bought them in Melbourne in 09 when we played down there and I happened to be there on a work trip. Bought them along with a few sherberts, went back to my seat, sat down, opened up my sports ears packaging and dropped the f**king thing straight into one of my beers!!!!!!!! $45 wasted!!!

That reminds me, anyone want to buy a slightly used pair of sports ears?????........... ;-)

I have both versions of SportsEars, but always use the basic version. I have had SportsEars since they were first available. The 1st ever set had a "tune" button on the front which you had to press to tune in to the signal and a "reset" button for when the signal dropped out. Sometimes during a break in play, a voice would come through the speakers and say "SportsEars, hear the game live". Thankfully they dropped that.

But yeah, wouldn't go to the game without them.

Thank you very for your input on this matter, you have all but convinced me to buy the sports ears. I think i will go all out and get the $80 ones, I don't really have the time to mess about the DIY way, although I appreciate the information I had seen that before :)

Finally, is there a store in which I can buy it instead of buying it online, it would be good to get it before May 21 as I will be off to Campbelltown Stadium when the Tigers take on the Panthers.

They can only pick up commentary at the ground

Can you explain what you mean by that?

I'm keen to get the budget model just to listen to the refs for what penalties were for and the tackle count since Suncorp doesn't have one on the big screen and I'm too lazy to count
