ST GEORGE Junior Rugby League Association celebrated its 100th anniversary by inducting 20 St George juniors into its inaugural hall of fame recently. A remarkable 15 of the 20 players played for Australia, including Jason Stevens and Billy Smith, were inducted.
Mark and Reg Gasnier (Renown United) and Arncliffe Scots duo Johnny King and Jack Lindwall were inducted too. Although not St George juniors, several other Dragons greats, including Johnny Raper and Graeme Wynn, celebrated the evening.

George Carstairs (Marist Brothers), Arthur Justice (St George junior), Bill Hardman, (Brighton-Le-Sands), Aubrey Kelly (St George junior), Percy Fairall (St George junior), Alby McAndrew (Brighton-Le-Sands), Jack Lindwall (Arncliffe Scots), Doug McRitchie (Brighton-Le-Sands), Jack Holland (St George junior), Billy Wilson (Kogarah Wanderers), Norm Provan (Sutherland Woronora), Bob Bugden (Sutherland Woronora), Reg Gasnier (Renown United), Johnny King (Arncliffe Scots), Billy Smith (Renown United), Steve Edge (St George Rowing Club), Chris Johns (Penshurst RSL), Brad Mackay (Brighton Seagulls), Jason Stevens (Brighton Seagulls) and Mark Gasnier (Renown United).

Great list. You could put together an excellent team from that lot.

Have they missed Jason Nightingale? Presumably only retired players qualify.

Agreed Willow as far as I'm concerned Nightingale is an Oatley boy who just happens to be a Kiwi.
15 out of 20 great strike rate

Also, they seem to have omitted Ray Lindwall as well. Would have been a better fullback (as opposed to Chris Johns)

Still, a pretty hot squad...

Fullback: Chris Johns
Winger: Johnny King
Centre/Winger: George Carstairs
Centre: Jack Lindwall
Centre: Reg Gasnier
Centre: Mark Gasnier
Centre: Doug McRitchie
Halfback: Alby McAndrew
Halfback: Bob Bugden
Halfback: Billy Smith
Hooker: Arthur Justice
Hooker: Steve Edge
Prop: Bill Hardman
Prop: Jack 'Dutchy' Holland
Prop: Billy Wilson
Prop: Jason Stevens
Second row: Norm Provan
Lock: Aubrey 'Jockey' Kelly
Lock/Hooker: Percy Fairall
Lock/five eighth: Brad Mackay

Move Mackay, McAndrew or Bugden into five eighth, and any one of those locks or props could fill the vacant back row spot.

It never occurred to me before that the best three halfbacks to ever play for Saints are all St George juniors.

Btw, you can add Robert Stone (Kogarah Marists) to R Lindwall and Nightingale as strange omissions. There's quite a few others that missed out too. I'll try and make up a list later.

Mostly St George Call newspaper in Trove - has ladders for most of first 45 years, plus 10 JL annual reports in Kogarah Library and some NSWRL annual reports in State Library.
I get it, real research. Years ago I visited Kogarah Library and made good use of their microfiche archives... I assume they've progressed since then? The match reports from the early 1900s were so well written.
The St George Call were pro Rugby League while other publications were pro Rugby Union. The St George Call had an excellent writer called 'Front Rower' - who remained anonymous, which was interesting in itself.
And Trove is a wonderful resource.

The sports coverage in St George Call was extraordinary. In the early days the paper was so small it appeared that they covered nothing but sport. They published ladders in all grades of St George Junior Cricket for most of 60 seasons as well as comprehensive coverage of other sports like tennis, bowls etc.

They did cover the Newtown Junior RU comps from its establishment in 1904 through to 1906 after which there was a change to electoral boundaries meaning that the St George Junior RU was established in 1907. However, within a few years Rugby League had decimated most of the RU comps below the Grade structure. By 1915 the only RU comp at either Senior or Junior Level playing competition games was the Northern Districts JU, whereas the League Grade comps and 9 Junior Leagues continued . The RU comps in Glebe, Balmain, Eastern Suburbs, St George, Northern Suburbs, Junior Sports Association, Catholic and Protrestant Churches had all disappeared, and the City and Suburban association was suspended. The last season for the St George JU was 1910 as all teams either switched to league or otherwise closed down in 1911.

The Cumberland, Fairfield and Windsor newspapers also had excellent coverage of Junior League in many seasons but could not match the consistently excellent coverage of St George Call.

Brilliant post. There's a book in there.
IMO not enough has been written about the 1907-1920 period.
