St George Stadium Email Addresses

Thanks to all for allowing me to push this cause again. This time in the Dragons section.

For some time, we have been fighting to keep the Dragons in the St George area. There is a proposal to upgrade the existing Barton Park / StGeorge Soccer Stadium in Rockdale into a multi-sports complex. It would become the home ground of St George Rugby League.
Supporters of Rugby League have an unique opportunity to formulate their own destiny.
It's already been said that Saints do best when they have their own home ground in the St George district.
Imagine how good it would be if the Dragons actually got a home ground as a result of our own determined attitude as Rugby League supporters. I say Rugby League because I firmly believe that a St George team playing in the St George district will benefit the game in all quarters.

Here is a summary of email addresses:
Rockdale Council:
AttentionMayor Peter Bryantrcc@rockdale.nsw.gov.au
Cr Steven Hoyroyd: sholroyd@acay.com.au
Cr Chris Myles: cmiles@acay.com.au
NSW Govt:
Local member for Kogarah
Cherie Burton: zpaster@parliament.nsw.gov.au
St George Leagues Club:
Peter Doust: pdoust@dragons.com.au
Robert Stone: rstone@dragons.com.au

Please remember that these people actually support the concept of St George Stadium.
All we are doing is reminding them that we are also behind the idea.
When sending your message, remember the following 2 points:
1.) We support this community project.
2.) We want an update as to when the Dragons will again have a home ground in the St George district.

Be sure to keep your message to the point and keep it polite.

Go for it people. The Dragons and Rugby League will always succeed as long as the supporters do their bit as well.

Thanks Rasputin.

I see that one of my emails has come back as 'undeliverable'. The one to Cherie Burton.

I'll try and find out the right email address for the state member (perhaps cburton@parliament.nsw.gov.au ? ).
All the others seem to be OK.

Today I got a reply from the mayor of Rockdale, Mr Peter Bryant. I have to say that he was prettyswift in his reply and came across well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steven;
I also am a "one eyed Dragon Supporter" in that I attend all
home games and many away games and I am Chairman of the
committee so you can have no doubt where my feeling rest.
The committee has only just been formed so at this point there
is nothing that I can convey to you however the task is a lot
bigger than it may appear.
In this day and age, a single use facility can not be justified
where it is only used one day a fortnight and even then, only in
winter.
To "happen" the facility will need to contain facilities that allow
it to be used 7 days a week and as such it will be "multi-sport
and multi-recreation".
The cost of the facility will be in the order of $60 million and
the Dragons will lease it but not contribute to the capital cost
and the innovators in the proposal are St George Soccer. A
soccer fan I am not, but I welcome their contribution.
As I said there is a lot of work to be done, not the least of
which is finance but who was it said that the longest march
commences with the first step.
We have taken that first step with a long march ahead of us.
I will be at the match on Saturday night but I hope that they
turn up ready to play, not like they were against the Cowboys.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am still waiting for a reply from Messers Peter Doust and/or Robert Stone.
I expect something soon.

Willow, sorry for the delay in responding asI have been away for a few days but the email I sentfor Cherie Burton has notbeen returned as undeliverable so I can only summise that the address is actually OK. I haven't had a relpy yet to be sure but maybe you should retry that address.

I also recieved a response from Peter Bryant which was very much along the same lines as the one you posted so won't put it up again, though his response to mine did not containthe reference to being a one eyed dragon supporter for obviuos reasons.

LOL. I guess not Rasputin.

I'm sure that he's been sending out emails like this regularly on a host of subjects.
The sign of a good politician is when they manage to answer promptly and add a personal touch within the letter. I think Mayor Bryant did that.

$60MIL is a shirt full of money! But as he points out, this is not just a footy field. It's a major sporting facility. I knew that before but the figure is larger than I figured.
The Campbelltown Stadium cost $20MIL and was largely funded by the State Govt.
I think the State Govt is the next port of call and I intend on talking to Campbelltown Council to find out how they went about it.

Here is a letter today from Mr Peter Doust who was good enough to reply:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Steven
I refer to your email of the 24th June 2001 and thank you for taking the
time to do so.
We too are excited about the prospects at Barton Park for the reasons you
mention and we are supporting the St George Soccer Club in their endeavours.
I believe progress has been solid, however the Soccer Club President, Mr
Bariamos has asked me to be confidential at this point. As soon as I can
say more I will.
Again, thanks for your email.
Yours sincerely
Peter Doust
Chief Executive Officer
St George Illawarra Dragons

A little bit stock standard. But good to see just the same.

Although the response was very standard it is better than no response at all. It is alo good to see different codes working towards the same goal so everyone can benefit.

I know very little about Barton Park. What are the facilties like and how hard is it to access the ground? I have many friends who live in the area and are all one eyed dragons supporters. A friend from school actually moved to Rockdale from Campbelltown so he could be in the heart of the dragons area and I assume there are many more like that.

Legend, I know a lot about the area having lived and worked there for years and I can tell you that it is an excellent location for a footy field.
The existing St George Soccer Stadium is in need of an upgrade and in fact the area very much in need of a sporting facility.
The facility would cater for many sports but there's no doubt that it's most famous tenant would the Dragons.
The proposed stadium would accomodate 20,000 in comfort which to my way of thinking is about right for a rugby league team which wants to further improve it's supporter base.
Barton Park, where the Stadium is located is situated on a very large section of land.
I don't know the actual acreage but for aninner southern suburb like Rockdale, it's massive. There's vacant areas of reclaimed land which are being used for nothing.
Much of thisis State Crown Land.
There was some suggestion on WORL that there isn't enough parking but this is nonsense.
The facility would be accessed from Bestic Street which is the main connecting road between The Grand Pde at Botany Bay and The Princes Hwy at Banksia/Rockdale.
Bestic Street is quite wide with 3 lanes running boths ways although there is section which is only dual lane which will have to be widened.
The nearest train stationsare Banksia and Rockdale Stations which are about 10 and 15 minutes by foot.
The area is heavily serviced by bus routes.
It is adjacent to boat ramps at Cooks River and there's a great bike track linking the whole bay area which will take you safely into the Park
Sydney International Airport is a short taxi ride although I have walked from the airport to Rockdale carrying a pack and I recall that it took about20-30 minutes.

One issue is the Chinese Vegetable farm which has an old farm house on it - that's right there's a farm in Rockdale. I've heard that the farm house is heritage listed and I for one wouldn't like to see anything like that bulldozed.
As far I can tell the building can still be preserved and possibly incorporated into the facility as a sporting museum. Still, thats a way off yet.
Hope this brings you into the picture, Legend.

G'day Clan and welcome to LWOS.
I put the link up on another thread in this forum but you're right it should be included in this discussion as well. An oversight.
It's great to see you here!
