St Helens vs Leeds Rhinos - Super League Grand Final 2008 - Discussion

So...

Less 18 hours to go and Brent Webb has been ruled out with a recurrence of his back injury from mid season. Leeds will probably shift Lee Smith to Full Back and Ryan Hall will come in on the wing. The only problem with this is that Hall has not played since the Semi Final defeat to Saints a couple of months back due to a broken foot in the same game.

I myself do not think that this will make that much difference because the weather is forecast to be, well... awful! 13c and Heavy Rain at game time and from the looks of the local TV weather bullitins the rain will be over Manchester from just after lunch. This will mean that the game should be played in the forwards.

Now Leeds were spanked 2 weeks ago and the forwards never got going but last week they came back with a bang when Peacock made 37 tackles and 229 meters and Jamie Jones Buchanan made 175 meters and 22 tackles... in fact only 2 of Leeds starting pack made less than 100 meters.

The rest week could be crucial though in 2 ways. Firstly Saints could be rejuvenated and come into the game fresh after only having 2 games in 5 weeks. On the other hand though is that really an ideal prep for a major final? I dont think so and i think it is something the RFL have to look at in the future. Leeds have had a tough game last week where in reality they were made to work hard for the win and I think Saints could turn up a bit cold.

All in all I think it will come down to 4 points either way (hopefully Leeds) but Im not holding my breath.

Heavy rain! That will make for an interesting style of game...

Leeds managed to knock off Saints after they had a week break last year, despite the loss in the semi. I think it could go either way, but the loss of Webb might be quite unsettling, he seems to do a lot in the structure of the attack to me.

Top work JLO.

It's a solid Saints squad on paper. But depends how they turn up on the day. Leeds are capable of pulling this off, hope it's a good game.

Being shown live in OZ at 3:30am-6:30am Sunday AEDST on Fox Sports 3, with a replay at midday-2:00pm on Fox Sports 2 as a lead-in to the Grand Final day broadcast of the Toyota Cup.

The expected bad weather along with the fact that the Rhinos come into this one being more match hardened than the Saints who had the week off suggests to me this will be closer than what many think.

I'll still stick with the Saints because they have clearly been the best team in the second half of the competition but perhaps a converted try the difference in the end.

Should be interesting...

Traditionally an open affair this game. The weather will complicate that considerably.

Who could forget the 1978 CC Final at Wembley???

Absolute cracker with one of the best atmospheres I have ever observed at a game. Capacity crowd of just under the 100,000 mark.

Is there anywhere we can listen to the grand final coverage live online?

Oh why did I get up at the start of the telecast? Now I've got to watch the lame build-up.
:)

Clarke is a bit of a strange pundit at times. Not sure how anyone thought it would be a good idea to start talking about 'ionic bonding' and 'thermo-nuclear explosions' before the game.

Exactly, Mr Average

You are being far too kind. Didnt even realise he was plaaying until I watched the replay when I got home... even then it was only due to the fact his hair was wet at the end of the game

"I said ooooooooooh Leeds Rhinos..."
