St Marys developments

St Marys are considering an arrangement that would see a $50 million shopping complex constructed in its car park, expansion of the club to 3 times its current size and installation of an athletics track around the northern training ground.

And yet they will not field a Jim Beam Cup side.

If only they had the same amount of brains as they have cash.

I heard that they lost $7 million in some flakey investment.

I guess the directors are happy to see a premier league team playing on their home ground bearing their name with a jersey with green in it.

The other consideration is that Jim Beam is a restricted competition and it is likely that St Marys spends more than $150,000 to run its A grade in the Penrith league.

Mono, I dug out the figures on St Marys grants to the football club:

2001 - $1.1 million for 45 teams in PJRL & 2 teams in metro
2002 - $1 million for 45 teams in PJRL
2003 - $1.3 million for 45 teams in PJRL and half share of premier league & Jim Beam
2004 - $1.3 million for 45 teams in JRL and half share of premier league

That is a fair contribution. I understand that some of the leagues clubs contribute less to NRL teams.

They are very interesting stats Nfed.
They have now also injected substantial funds to become the sleeve sponsor of the Panthers NRL team and Cougars PL side.
Whilst its a fair contribution I simply cant help but think the excellent facilities at their disposal are wasted by hosting only 6 games per year. This for a team that appears to get less suport from the 'Saints' fan than the clubs A-Grade team.
I know the Jim Beam Cup team was no different when playing as the Cougars but feel the club needs a stand alone team in a level of competition such as the Jim Beam Cup that they can call their own.
The contribution is substantial though I doubt they couldnt spare the cash needed for a Jim Beam Cup venture.

Thats Leagues Club directors for you though.
A number of the Guildford players from the 2003 Jim Beam Cup season have returned to A-Grade for the 2005 season yet there is dissapointingly no signs of a return to an elite level competiton.

St Marys definately needs a stand alone team for it's supporters to follow on.

Absolutely, there is nothing to aspire to tho playing in the PL is there?
There needs to be a 2nd division NRL.

And while we are at it, why not bring back Central Cumberland as well?

A few years ago, around 4-5 years ago.
St Mary's were going to break away from the Penrith District Junior league.
This is when the idea came about for St Marys and Penrith to form the cougars. Penrith thought this would keep St Mary's happy.

St Mary's are a powerful club, have stacks of cash, and I can tell you they spend in excess of $200K per season on the A Grade squad.

I have a feeling very soon, with all the talk about expansion in the coming years, that St Mary's may be involved with the forming of a team on the other side of this country.

They have expanded from Local A Grade, to metro Cup, now into the NSWRL 1st Division, the next step is to go straight to the NRL.
