Star Wars why I love the old ones, disliked the new ones and am dreading the new ones

Old Ones.

- Good V Evil was clearly defined, you cheered Luke Skywalker and you boo'd Darth Vader.
- Lucas had a young child and was clearly enjoying life at that stage loved a good old fashioned fable.
- Merchandising was not at all an issue a good old fashioned sword and sorcery(lightsaber V light saber flick) was the ideology not the Kmart toy section.
- Was just a feel good jaunt that at the end of it you walked out feeling good.

New ones.

- Dark and brooding - goes against what we loved in our child hood.
- CGI takes all the personality out of it.
- Jar Jar binks wtf!

Latest movies comming out.

- We know we are going be seeing a triology, a spin off, a spin off on the triology and a prequel based on all this and repeat 3 times, a cartoon series and god knows what else!

End rant.

Your thoughts?

Prequels - good story, woeful acting and script. Have a few beers and Hayden Christensen becomes preeetty funny though

Hoping the sequel takes inspiration from some of the extended universe book series, some of them are excellent

The acting isn't that bad...its flat but thats lucas as a director and the fact they are acting against green screen. Ewan McGregor is a good actor as is Liam Neeson and they were both so flat that they sucked the life out of me. The first scene in The Phantom menace holy smokes.

There is so much wrong with the new ones that I don't know where to start. What about the fact that almost every scene is shot in "shot reverse shot". There are episodes of Seinfeld with more dynamic direction.

Here is an opinion that I have.

The Phantom Menace in comparison to Attack of the Clones is not that bad. Attack of the Clones is almost offensive as far as the romance/romantic dialogue goes. The Phantom Menace is just nonsensical and boring.

EDIT

As far as the new ones go I will give it a chance. JJ Abrams can direct action pretty well and the writing staff have good credentials.

The prequels did damage.

episodes 4-6 appeared as a fable of good, represented by a young bloke Luke, coming of age and fulfilling a prophecy to overturn evil, spearheaded by Darth Vader.

What episodes 1-3 did was highlight a guy, Anakin, who was tormented by love that he turned evil. SO much so it overrides episodes 4-6 knowing the big guy in the black suit is butt hurt. It's a 6 film series of tainted love.

I didn't mind the new ones when they came out (didn't love them) but re-watched one recently and it was just terrible.

The overdose of CGI is the worst thing, it all just looks so fake and makes it hard to buy into. The interaction between the human actors and CGI characters is very awkward. You just have to watch Ewan MacGregor's scene with those long-necked aliens that breed Storm Troopers. It's a really disjointed conversation and difficult to watch.

Not a fan of CGI Yoda either. Actually he sucks overall in 1 - 3.

It's hard to condemn Lucas for the direction the prequels took, at least from my point of view. Without hindsight, it's not such a stretch to think the kids who are thirty years older will want something a bit darker. Wrong call apparently, but like I said, that's with hindsight.

I was very young when Phantom Menace came out and I didn't mind it, thought Attack of the Clones was ok and really liked Revenge of the Sith.

Grand Admiral Thrawn from the Zhaan Triology would be pretty epic.

When you sit down to watch them with someone who hasn't seen them before (eg your kids) do you watch them chronologically in the story or in the order they came out? Seems like watching them chronologically basically ruins the big payoff moment - "Because I am your father"?

They'll pretty much have to jump a fair way into the future to involve any of the classic characters (Han, Luke, Leia) as they are all looking old. They could get around this by recasting for those characters with younger actors but I doubt they will go down that path

Personally I would have prefered them to go in the opposite direction and base new films in the Old Republic era.

As long as Disney watched those Red Letter Media reviews and learned some lessons from Lucas' mistakes then I have hope.

I can't stand them but Disney seem to have kept the Marvel fanbase happy with all of the new superhero movies, hopefully they can do the same with Star Wars.
