yes, it is a ritual of initiation that new players to the squad each have to eat 5 of the aforementioned pests of their own state.

I believe it iriginated many years ago. Cockroach was the name of an old, old wooden ship.

Im not sure exactly when it happened (id wager it was 1980ish), but....

Each state got to name their opposition, (i dont know if they were treated as official logos at the time, or if it was just a newspaper thing). NSW were originally going call QLD the Banana Benders, but once they heard QLD were calling them the Coachroaches, NSW decided to go with Cain Toads.

The great irony is that, of cockroaches and caintoads in Australia, QLD's the one infested with both....

I believe the story is that the QLD team was bunkered down watching an interstate match on video - back around 1980, and a cockroach crawled up onto the screen, and Muir remarked how the insect tended to stay on the side of the field that NSW was on - hence the nickname stuck.

As for canetoads, well NSW had to think of something as repulsive as a cockroach, that was easily identifiable with QLD, and thus the canetoad was chosen.

Not sure about QLD's but Wikipedia says that a young Ian Roberts won a competition back in mid 1979 to name the squad .

I thought they had to smoke them...thru a bong just before the game starts. The banana benders had to top that of course and smoke some banana leaves at half time as well.

Let the State of Irrigation begin!
