MANLY great Steve Menzies could be set to make a return to the NRL next year to break Terry Lamb’s record as the highest capped player in the game.
Menzies has spent the past two seasons playing for English club Bradford.
Off contract, the 36-year-old backrower is still keen to play for another season.
At least three English clubs are interested in accommodating the Sea Eagles’ legend, with a return to the NRL an option.
“Never say never,” Menzies’ manager, Wayne Beavis, told The Manly Daily.
“I’m sure he could still play (in the NRL), it’s whether Manly could fit him under the salary cap. I’m sure he wouldn’t play at any other club.”
Ex-Sea Eagle John Gibbs said the return of Menzies would be great for the club and code.
“This would be significant as he’s played 349 games, which is equal to Terry Lamb, and he would go past him,” Gibbs said.
“You would think Manly would be the most likely spot.”
Menzies retired from the NRL in 2008 after leading the Sea Eagles to a brilliant, grand-final flogging of Melbourne.
That 40-0 win was Menzies’ 349th appearance in first grade, equalling Lamb.
Another Sea Eagles icon, Cliff Lyons, said Menzies could still cut-it in the NRL.
“If he’s playing good enough footy, why not? He’s only a young fellow,” Lyons said.
“I think it would be great for Manly and great for Steve.”
Manly CEO Graham Lowe was unavailable for comment, but the Daily understands club officials are keen to get Menzies on board.
