Stop The Clock

We need to stop the clock when the ball is dead in goal.

It kills me to see the clock going: 1. Between a conversion and kick off or 2. Before a drop out.

I feel ripped off. It may extend the coverage a few minutes, who cares.

Stop the clock for ads = bigger TV contract.
There are too many ads in Sydney................

How about you stop the clock from the time the ref calls HELD to the time the ball is played? The accumulation of all those nanoseconds would mean hundreds of opportunities for flash advertising.

I agree with the OP. where the ball is effectively 'dead' and neither team can really do anything about it the clock should be stopped. i'm not saying teams get the clock stopped and have a 2minutes timeout, but take the other night at brookie when the beagles scored in the last minute and debated taking the shot or not. had they not taken it the storm would have walked slowly back to halftime killing the clock anyway.

we've seen dropouts where the team kicking doesnt even bother to go pick up the ball and when they eventually do they slow it down as much as possible, I know there's a 45 sec shot clock but i havent seen too many penalize anyone for going over it

Agree totally with OP

Mandatory stoppages for when the ball goes dead in goal, in touch, after a try is awarded or a penalty kick at goal is taken would bring many benefits such as less pressure of refs to call time off if he thinks a team is deliberately wasting time, create more advertising opportunities for broadcasters.

As long as there is a type of "shot clock" for these stoppages, e.g. 30 sec to take a drop kick, form the scrum etc, as this would stop games dragging out for too long.

Why is it that all the Union trolls advocate for fundamental changes to the game.

Yet when Murdoch did his SuperLeague thing to Union (by creating "Super Rugby") no massive structural changes to the game occured (other than making it look and play more like League than ever before)

The only place that Ive seen any commentary on "needing more ads" seems to be on this forum and mostly from Unionites.

Yes lets make it like a game of NFL that lasts 3 hours with timeouts, 2 minute warnings, clock stoppages whenever the ball gets run out of play etc etc

So at the back end of an exciting Origin with the scores locked, and tired players take 31s to take a drop out, you are suddenly thrown into a massive boredom?

The OP has it spot on, the amount of times teams are denied a set of 6 because of the clock running when it doesn't need to be needs stopping.

I'm lucky as a BRit as we don't really get ad breaks, we get the stream while you're in ads, so for me this has nothing to do with ads or revenue, it just seems common sense to stop the clock in said situations.

To be perfectly honest I'm surprised anyone is against the suggestion.

Meanwhile, stopping the clock takes a major plays out of the game, i.e. the kick for touch. We have already changed the rules so the clock stops when one side has packed the scrum - that is enough.

What constantly annoys me is that every year we feel the need to make major changes to the game without any real cause. Why does this need to be changed? It doesn't affect the game, and no team is getting an advantage out of it.

Rugby League has a great history of evolving, but it was always natural. The limited tackle rule was introduced because St George were too dominant in maintaining possession and wearing out the opposition, the catching in goal rule was introduced after the tactic of the bulldogs to just bomb into the ingoal, meaning they would just pin teams in there constantly, etc.

This is changing a rule for the sake of changing a rule, which is stupid.

I agree with conversions absolutely. It's remarkable how quickly a kicker can take a kick from the sideline when they need to do it fast and it's even more amazing that a kick from in front can take 90 seconds. Stop the clock every time and give them 60 seconds to get it over or default the chance at a kick.

The rest I could probably be convinced of, but would be equally happy to leave as is.

They tried that, until goal kicking wingers had to take mega quick shots when they were still buggered from scoring length of the field tries.
