I absolutely love watching NFL, and have been doing so for almost a decade now and yet I still don't know much about certain rules. One of them that just seems so wildly inconsistent (and incredibly frustrating as a viewer) is that whenever anyone has even the slightest injury, they just lie down on the field and the clock is stopped (but no timeout is charged to their team).
It seems to happen every couple of drives, in every match. Someone cops a minor knock, or comes down slightly awkwardly and they walk around for a bit before deciding to just drop to the floor and the game stops for a few minutes.
What's the rule with this? Is there one? It seems like a very easy way to give your defence a breather or buy time for your QB to talk to his coach without burning a timeout.
