A leading bookmaker has suspended betting on the NRL wooden spoon after fielding several bets for premiers Melbourne to finish last.

Title favourites Melbourne are currently fourth on the NRL ladder after four wins and two losses and have been the subject of a salary cap investigation.

"We took three bets to win $10,000 and another to win $8000 for the Storm to win the wooden spoon all within 10 minutes of each other this morning," said Sportingbet Australia spokesman Bill Richmond.

"You don’t take a series of bets like that unless someone knows something and we have suspended betting on the wooden spoon as a result.

"Melbourne is now our worst result for the wooden spoon despite the fact they are premiership favourites."

In 2002, the Bulldogs were deducted 37 competition points and fined $500,000 after being found guilty of salary cap breaches totalling more than $1 million in two seasons.

It took the Bulldogs from the top of the table to eventual wooden spooners.

this sort of thing seems to happen every year, brisbane, roosters and i think the 2nd time for the storm in the past.
nothing usually happens, and someone is out of pocket for some serious coin.

Meh, if theyre gonna do it hurry up and do it so we can win 15 or 16 on the trot to still make the finals.

Bets to win 10 000? They wouldnt actually be particularly big bets would they, because I'd imagine Melbourne were at massive odds to win the spoon in the first place.

Wouldnt even be someone plunging, just some throwing a lazy hundred or so on a result.

Is it only one bookie?

There is no hundred that is that lazy.

If it's more than one bookie then suspending the betting like this is a bad thing. Smacks of insider knowledge & therefore some level of corruption

So someone has had a go at them on the TAB as well. You would expect that they should be a similar price to Manly and Wests at the very least but most likely a similar price to the Dragons considering the start to the year and the fact that they are reigning premiers.

When punters start throwing reasonable money at odds like that, you know there is something fishy going on.

If they are paying $100 to get the spoon, the bet would only have been $100.

They would have been at least $201 like the Dragons so it would have only been a $50 bet.

But I am sure I heard Hadley while I was in the car say that there was a $10000 bet on the Storm to get the wooden spoon. A bet that size, not to win $10000.

Just to clarify, the odds for the three bets placed were 10,000 8000 and 8000. Which means that the actual bets placed would have been no more than $110. Still, for three different people to place such strange bets on Melbourne for the spoon something must be going on. Either that or 3 mates spent a little to long at the pub last night

They were $251

So about a $40 bet.

Big deal. We all know the Storm cheat, but they will never be caught.
