Strengthening the player pool

SL has a salary cap rule of:
players converting from union to league count as "0" towards the cap in the their first season, and only 50% of their salary counts toward the cap in their second season. 'Returning' players' salaries count as 50% in the first year coming back, and 75% in their second season. Teams can sign up to two "new talent pool" or "returning talent pool" players in a season.

Would it be good to see the NRL follow suit and see more talent coming into the NRL? could be another nail in the union coffin which would be an added bonus.

It's not really necessary, it makes sense because arguably many English union players are better athletes than their SL equivalent. Case in point Owen Farrell vs Luke Gale. Admittedly Farrell is the son of dual code Andy Farrell, in addition to that Premiership Rugby in England has a salary cap about three times the size of the Super League cap, so I can see the financial benefit for Super League clubs not having to include the large price tags in the cap.

As it stands, an entire Blooper Rugby team in Australia can be bought with half an NRL teams cap. Does the NRL really need the financial assistance? They already grab the majority of the union school boys team on developmental contracts before they're out of school (Crichton).

Not really sure which athletes they'd be looking to grab anyway. Guys like Quade Cooper (who could have been a star in League in his prime) were offered chances at League and chose union on personal preference.

The forwards outside 8, 7 and 6 wouldn't be able to maintain the pace of a League game.

Of current union players I'd say Michael Hooper, Dane Haylett-Petty, Reece Hodge, Koroibete (who's ex Storm anyway) and maybe three or four others could be decent. Some probably wouldn't even make it beyond being a bench player. Plus the majority of Australian union players these days are either migrant South Africans who breathe union or Fijian and Polynesian kids who couldn't play 7s.

We have that rule here as well except it applies to any player from anywhere if they sign with the Roosters.

National reserve grade with all 4 bench players playing 40 min in reserve grade

And introduce a U22s layer to help forwards development

The South Africans must have some blokes, centres or wingers, I do not watch, AB De Villers would probably be good at it if he tried.

Best to target the junior teams from say u18’s and u20’s before they become recognised Union players.

Serious question for the people who follow it, how much is a good RSA union player on?

Same for kiwis, Shaun not worth a million, what did Dan Carter earn in his prime, what does the top guy get now?

Ben Hunt, DCE apparently a million, do Union guys get that much, more?

Players like Carter, McCaw, Read, Barret etc. Would all be in the $1 million territory. With New Zealand the big addition is sponsorship TPAs. Adidas paid huge money to the NZRU to guarantee all Kiwi jerseys were Adidas, the boots were Adidas and even the ball for All Blacks home games is made by Adidas.

South Africa is the same, the highest paid athletes in South Africa are Rugby and Cricket players. The best of Kiwi and Saffa players get hit up for $1 million+ contracts by the Poms, France and Japan.

Main point of difference is that neither country has a salary cap the way Australian sports do. South Africa has no cap of any sort and NZ doesn't have a team cap, just an individual player cap. You can't be paid more than $1 million for Super Rugby but you can add as much as an extra $500,000 if you're an All Black plus no limits on TPAs or endorsements.

SBW has a religious issue with the Bank of New Zealand so they let him have a personal sponsor from Plunket who were giving something to the effect of a $250,000 top up on his contract with Auckland and the All Blacks.

Money aside it's cultural for both countries. For Islanders and Maori Rugby Union is a sport perfectly designed for their range of body types and has been adopted by Islander community culture. For Saffas (particularly white Saffas) it's pretty much their secondary religion. Very hard in my experience to even convince them to watch League without them asking why the scrums aren't contested or where the line outs have gone.
