Rabbitohs five-eighth John Sutton and centre Colin Best have been selected in NSW Induction Squad in the lead up to the 2009 State of Origin series.

The 40-man squad was selected by the NSW selectors today, recognising the efforts of these players so far this season.

The squad, which will come together at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Wednesday 29 April, was extended to 40 players due to strong competition for several positions.

The five-eighth position remains hotly-contested with the likes of Sutton, Terry Campese, Kurt Gidley, Luke Lewis and Jarrod Mullen among the players selected capable of filling the void.

NSW Rugby League General Manager Geoff Carr today issued a challenge to players who had not been picked in the induction day squad.

“Players who haven’t gained selection in the induction day squad can still be picked for the Blues,” Carr said.

“The selectors have picked a 40-man squad based on performances so far this season but there is still several weeks to go until the actual team is picked.

“There is certainly time for other players not in the squad to put their hand up and earn selection.”

2009 NSW Aussie Blues Induction Day Squad is:

Luke Bailey (Titans)
Colin Best (Rabbitohs)
Terry Campese (Raiders)

I am surprised that Best made the squad. Probably picked on what he did last season then what he has done this season. While his defense is better then I expected his attack is down. This could be because he is a winger playing centre or maybe that the Raiders attacking style of last season suited him better then what Souths does this season.

I wouldn't be surprised if he makes the Origin side. His defence is very good but unsurprisingly his attack has been down as he hasn't really been given any space to work with atm. NSW don't have a lot of depth especially in the centres since Jamie Lyon has said that he doesn't want to play.

I agree with Newcastlerabbit Merritt should have made the squad. He has been a consistent try scorer for years and his defence and overall game has improved so much. He would not let the selectors down.
Don't agree with African Monkey that souths need Hegarty back. He was a strong runner from dummy half but his defence was bad. He had plenty of time to prove himself and there was a reason he was let go. Good luck to him at the cowboys.

How many times did Nathan Blacklock and John ferguson play for NSW. Playing on the wing for NSW is more about then just scoring tries.
