Tahu out for season
By Margie McDonald
July 23, 2004

NEWCASTLE have lost a second international player within a week following a season-ending injury to winger Timana Tahu.

News that Tahu needs surgery on his injured ankle came just three days after 2003 Kangaroo tourist Steve Simpson broke his jaw against the Broncos last Sunday and will be out for at least eight weeks - effectively ending his 2004 campaign.

Simpson made a comeback against Brisbane after 12 weeks out with a foot injury.

With seven matches left, starting with the North Queensland Cowboys in Newcastle on Sunday, the Knights are sitting in 10th spot, one win outside the eight.

"It's a real battle for a place between three or four teams all trying, like us, to gain momentum and string a couple of wins together," Newcastle coach Michael Hagan said.

"In the case of Timana and Steve Simpson it's now like having one hand behind our backs. But it's just a matter of trying to be as healthy as we can be from now until the end."

Newcastle is not the only club feeling the traditional injury pinch late in the season.

St George Illawarra have Mark Gasnier with an arm in a sling and Lance Thompson on crutches.

Gasnier re-injured his collar-bone on Tuesday when he tripped as he tried to get out of team-mate Jason Ryles' car. He originally cracked it in Origin III. Gasnier is expected to be on the sidelines for a further five weeks.

Penrith will decide today whether to appeal against Ben Ross's nine-match ban.

Good chance for him to have the operation now and be fit for the start of the next season.

So it looks like Timana gets the surgery now, and should be OK for start of the season with us?

Not sure that Knights will make the finals anyway...

Good news for us at least, this way he's fit to start his career with Parramatta. hame he doesn't get to play a final game for the Knights though.

Notice that both Riddell and Tahu now have injuries. Hopefully, they will be alright next year and not a couple of dud buys.

Actually Riddell is injured as well, supposed to be missing a few weeks on top of his suspension.

What are the odds of Ridell and Cayless playing a full season? Same as John Howard winning "Male hunk of the year"!

Did anyone see Mark Latham's reply to Sterlo's question:

Q. "Who would you like to most line up against in a game of footy"?

A. "Alexander Downer.......I like a soft target"?

I don't recall Riddell ever really having any major injury problems at all. Infact he's probably been one of the most consistent players at the Dragons over the past 2 years with Barrett, Ryles, Gasnier & Co being the ones with the injury concerns.

However, Tahu & Cayless playing out a full season would draw very long odds...

If Cayless stopped breaking his arm on other people's heads he'd have a better chance.

I noticed that when Riddell is back on the field for the Dragons that he may be put into the Forward pack as a Prop/2nd Rower rather than hooker. apparently the rumour is that Nathan brown wants to give other players a chance to get used to the position for next year.

Ridell spends too much time suspended to get injured!

Suity - paid!

He's been rather well behaved this year. To date I believe this is his first suspension is it not?
