Soward keen for switch
Greg Prichard | May 28, 2007
Jamie Soward's manager, Sam Ayoub, says the Sydney Roosters halfback is likely to switch to St George Illawarra this week, provided the Roosters management agrees to let him out of his contract.
Ayoub said the halfback was still not happy with his situation at the Roosters, despite his surprise promotion to first grade for their win over Cronulla on Saturday night. Soward was not originally named in the team.
"I would imagine the fact Jamie was brought back into the team is an indication that the Roosters want to keep him," Ayoub said. "But he was pretty unhappy with the way he had been treated before that, and I don't know that playing on Saturday night will change things.
"Jamie felt ignored and neglected. He got dropped to the club's part-time squad early in the season and didn't think that was justified."
Ayoub said his discussions with the Dragons had gone a fair way towards arranging a new club for Soward, if he is free to go.
"I had some discussions with the Roosters, and I was given the OK to at least talk to other clubs about Jamie," Ayoub said.
"I've talked to [Dragons coach] Nathan Brown about him, and they're very interested. We've discussed terms, but there are still a couple of things that need to be done before a switch could happen. I expect to be talking to Nathan again very soon."
The Herald understands St George Illawarra may need to offload a player to another club to free up space under the salary cap to sign Soward, who played well when brought in over the top of selected halfback Mitchell Pearce against the Sharks. He had a hand in both Roosters tries as they came back from 12-0 down to win 13-12.
