Could someone please explain to me why Saints wouldn't resign Thompson.

If anything, he's spent a fair bit of time off the field with inj / suspension... I would imagine that may play a role.

His form has been "fair" but not up there will other forwards eg, LAM, Coops, Friz, Rusty.

I like Thommo, and hope we keep him. Havent seen the best of him to date.

I think it was mentioned elsewhere that he is chasing too much coin for his upgrade contract ,this is the problem when players are signed for overs ,when it comes time to renew their contract there is a sense of entitlement that they (the player) should get more.

I like Thompson as a player but he aint worth the $400k he is on now let alone extra.

Hard to shine when playing in a team like the Knights. There is every reason to be confident that Tariq's form will improve in a different team, just like that of other ex Knights like Leulia & Tapine

Hard to shine? All our forwards are under 20 years old and are out performing sims.

Leilua isn't playing any different to what he did at the knights.

Tapine played a handful of first grade games.

Brown throws support behind Sims amid cut and run claims

NEWCASTLE coach Nathan Brown has come to the defence of departing skipper Tariq Sims amid a wave of criticism of his decision to depart the struggling club possibly before the 2016 season is out.
St George Illawarra confirmed late on Monday night that they had lured the Gerringong junior back to Wollongong on a lucrative three-year deal starting next season.

The statement said that Sims would join the club in November, but he may yet don the Red V this season with Knights CEO Matt Gidley saying on Monday such a move prior to the June 30 transfer deadline would rest on whether the Dragons can present an acceptable player swap deal.

“At this stage, we’re open to having a discussion [about an early release] but Tariq’s contract with us is until the end of 2016,’’ Gidley said.

Such a move would certainly be an interesting one with the Dragons still to face the he Knights twice this season with the first clash coming in round 16 – five days prior to the June 30 deadline.
With the Knights faithful already enduring a season from hell Sims has copped plenty of flak on social media from fans suggesting the Fijian International is looking to flee a sinking ship.

Brown sought to clarify the situation in the immediate aftermath of the Knight heart-breaking 20-18 loss to the Eels on Monday.
"I understand Tariq is getting a bit of a hard time on social media,” Brown said.

“People probably need to understand that Tariq didn't come in and demand a pay rise, the market forces determine Tariq deserved to get paid what he's to be paid.
"As the head coach of the club and with Moons [Football Manager Darren Mooney] we made a decision that it wasn't in our best interests to move into those figures at this stage.
“We have inherited a roster that has a salary cap which is in a certain situation and we have to make some hard calls early on.

“Sometimes you lose players you don’t want to lose. People shouldn’t judge the player. Tariq's copping a bit of unfair criticism out there because of what someone else was willing to pay.

“He is well within his right to actually say 'I'm going to get paid this elsewhere and if you aren't going to come to the party well then I may leave'. That’s the business we’re in.
"It's not his fault he got offered what he got offered. The Dragons determined he has a value.”

Brown gave little away when asked whether Sims would see out the remainder of the season in the Hunter.
“At this stage all I can is that Taz is here. That’s probably the best way to put it.

You've summed him up pretty well mate...I wouldn't want to see him go either, he looks the goods at times but just doesn't seem to deliver...he just goes through the motions and unlike Frizz rarely seems to strive for that xtra yard or two...now whether that's as you say hes spent a fair bit of time off the field remains to be seen I guess

Yes mate, agree.
he hasnt hit the heights of his Canberra days. He has moments, esp in defence, but hasnt peaked with us TBH. . Cant understand why, as he is built like a brick sh...se, has good speed, and was devastating a few years back. Hope he stays as I think he still has a lot to offer.

Sims has been playing well in a beaten side. Considering their pack is owned on the regular to average 80m+, 30+ tackles/2 missed tackles , play 80 minutes and given he's come back from two broken legs i think he's doing okay. Not impressive but his most recent 5 matches have been over 100m/30 tackles.

I think he'll improve out of Newcastle. We all know what losing regularly can do to performances and starting fresh is what he needs.

Frizz produces bigger numbers by a good margin and so does most of your pack. Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Lol look at your posts in this thread, its 100% meltdown! Repeating the same thing in long-winded posts hoping that someone somewhere will agree is very Vasilevsky. Next thing you'll starta thread entitled 'Rate Tariq Sims' full of 2/10 ratings.

Weve got plenty of workers in our pack, the only guys who can be classified as enforcers is Thommo and Packer, and the latter is a bit of a stretch but he'll work up to it.

Sims fills a roll. We need a guy who opposition are going to think twice about running at - even if they see Sims and get concerned about having their head taken off, thats a second of doubt we need to put into the opposition! He hasnt hit his peak at Newcastle as an 80 minute player, some players just dont fit into clubs, but theres no denying that hes got aggression and power, even at Newcastle.

The fact that he has shown in the past that he has the ability (at the Cowboys) to match it with the best forwards in the world is an added bonus. And $400k is nothing for a player of that calibre.

The only concern anyone should have over this signing is how the coaching staff use him. If Mary throws him onto the edge and gets him to play 80 minutes (putting Friz in the middle) as a workhorse then he's failed. If he plays him in 2x20-30 minute stints for pure impact and fear factor, he will pay dividends.

Your arrogance is astounding.

If you can't see that I have purely validated the reason for my opposition to this signing then you are being foolish.

In my posts rather than being glib, I actually try to provide reasoning for my position and you call it a melt down and liken me to Vas.

I have actually asked people to explain why it is such a good signing and a familiar ring tone appears.

He was good a few years ago, right player in the wrong club a seachange will help him bla bla.

This is exactly the same as the proposition you put forward re Lafai.

Now you probably think Lafai is going gangbusters whereas I think he is pedestrian, although I admit going marginally better in the last few games.

You didn't mind engaging with all and sundry and providing plenty of detail why Lafai was a good signing in your opinion.

So a difference of opinion should be acceptable to you and the fact that I am willing to outline a thought process where others don't should not lead you to a ridiculous assumption.

I think a new home with security of a 3 year contract, fresh lease on life, may lead to the Sims we saw few years back.

You make a great point re Newcastle being absolutely riddled with issues since the Tinkler days.

Good post.

Not sure on this. Gut feel suggests no way. Lacks commitment and likely to spend most of his contracted period suspended. Hope he proves me wrong.
Burning question though, if he is a 2nd rower, what about Friz and Thompson?

Had to push myself to keep reading after the pure irony oozing out of your first sentence!

Plenty of people have provided adequate reasons thatthis is a decent signing. Noone has claimed he will turn us into a force, but a quality player at a reasonable price is a dumb thing to scoff at. Yes, we still need a 7, 9 and coach, but this signing shouldnt affect those in any way.

But you, kind sir, have ignored them all and continued to beat your reptitive drum with no recognition of any of these positives! If thats not Vas-like, I dont know what is!!!
