Team for the Broncos Game

I know it's purely hypothetical but I feel the Dragons with Benji would have been leading 16-0 at halftime. He is the most vital player in the team with Dugan a close second.

Any competent half could have helped us get some early points, we were all over their forwards, just needed a foil for Widdop.
I read earlier in the week that Hutch was replacing Benji and I was confident we'd put in a good show but as soon as I tuned in last night and heard De Belin was our 7 I knew 100% we had no hope. That's the most amateurish decision Mary has made so far and I suspect he had Young and Co in his ear going " defence maaaate, defeeence ". Extremely disappointed and what the hell was Green doing out there when we had Nabuli still on the books, good grief.
I'm not blaming DB or Green for anything, they do their best, I lay this totally at the feet of our coaching team for their stupid decisions / selections and for not treating the Broncos and Bennett with any respect - " oh it worked against the Warriors, let's do it against the best defensive and ladder leading team". fmd.

There's 2 issues here.

The line that gets trotted out that our best juniors leave as they would have better opportunities in FG at other clubs is rubbish. Hastings had the Origin halves in front of him when he signed with the Roosters, yet made his debut in a minor premiership deciding game last year. The Sharks signed Barba as their marquee 5/8 signing, yet Bird has practically played the whole year.

The fact is, we just back the wrong horses. The fact that there was no confidence to play Hutch in this game indicates to me we have been saddled with another dud junior, joining the list which includes the likes of Runciman, Stockwell, Stanley, Henry, King and Green and co. Aitken is the only one with an ounce of talent.

We chose to keep most of those guys while we let the only 2 kids we brought along who can actually make a difference go to other clubs.

We are a basket case.

A little harsh in my opinion. No one could have foreseen the injury problems that would strike down Stanley and King. Two extremely talented players. I personally and I think many people had high hopes for Stockwell. Green is a backrower in the Ben Creagh mold or a NSW Cup centre at best. Runcimen and Henry never once showed anything in first grade. Runcimen is an average NSW Cup centre and Henry of course is no longer good enough to play in the NSW Cup.

As for Hastings and Bird, it really depends on how much money they are on. And I'm not sure what position you see either of them on this team. I guess they could be in the halves now in place of Benji and Widdop but in my opinion, neither can even be compared to Benji, the latter at best no better than Widdop. The former still hasn't proven himself. Impossible to say.

Still, the selections from last night boggle the mind. Green on the wing and JDB in the halves??!! WTF???? I can't understand why Mary hasn't burnt the Bennett playbook from 5 years ago. Price was an utter moron and seemingly was more interested in what he thought a rival coach (Bennett) would like him to do rather than what is best for the team and his own career. But Mary was unwanted by Bennett. This is why it's so baffling to me.

Not something you can pin on one or two positions. We clearly had problems across the park. At half time we actually had more possession but were well behind on the score board, a result of there being little or no game plan in place.

Brisbane simply had a deeper back line, plus supports running the angles and decoy runners all with a plan - this what a structured attack should look like. There were obvious examples with tries being scored on the end of that deeper back line, and it could been seen from miles away. And yet, it still looked like they were doing the basics.

The only answers our defence had was to turn and chase... or rush up out of the line in an attempt to cut off the supports, thus falling for the old three card trick.

Our attack, in comparison, was far too flat. There's a good reason why the other side was making more line breaks. I don't know if we made a single line break all night but I recall Widdop made a semi-break when our attack started running some angles from a deeper start, but it was short lived.

your right stupid decisions pretty well sums it up.....we had a specialised winger sitting on the sidelines and a forward come halfback playing whilst the half back sat warming the bench until the 53rd min.....and as I said earlier Marys idea was he didn't want to expose the kid to early in such an important game....for petes sake he was probably more nervous sitting there waiting than if he had been introduced earlier when his presence may have made a difference...instead of bringing him on at 22 nil and then trying to play catch up...imo there was much more pressure on him then than earlier.....and if as you say the coaching theme was to focus on deeefence then that worked didn't it, they put 32 on us and the sad part was I don't think the Broncos played that well to be honest

Just based on last nights game, Broncos can't win the premiership...even the clowns on Ch9 mentioned, our lack of attack would not save them against a roosters/ cowboys or Souths pack...we were outplayed, out coached. Widdop didn't seem to take line on much last night, and Dugan bless his heart burns so much energy going sideways most of the time.

Agree re Broncos...I don't think they have enough in them to take it out...even though they get mainly their 7 day turn around, Friday night specials, almost no Monday games and they play with 18....I don't know what they are going to do when Langer gives it away...he spends more time at the back setting the defence than he does running the water bottles :)
