AFL: Televised tribunal hearings might go ahead
Article Date Thursday, March 18 2004 - 16:52

AFL Tribunal hearings could be televised this year -- whether the players like it or not.
The league is still sifting through responses from players, clubs and the AFL Players Association over Foxtel's proposed plan to screen tribunal hearings in 2004.
But broadcasting, strategy and major projects general manager BEN BUCKLEY says hearings could be televised despite player objections.
A decision is expected early next week.

Personally, I think this is a great idea to give us fans an insight into the workings of the AFL Tribunal.

They've scrapped the idea apparently.

Apparently all the correct procedures are not yet in place.

The plan is to allow Fox Footy to tape a number of "pilot" broadcasts to determine if tribunal screenings should go ahead next year.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said yesterday that live broadcasts could bring greater transparency and public understanding to tribunal decisions, but added there was more work to be done. "At this stage, the AFL's not comfortable that we have all the protocols in place to our satisfaction and therefore we will not be broadcasting the tribunal in 2004."

Demetriou said the league would select several rounds this season and allow Fox Footy to tape the hearings, but not broadcast them. "That way it shouldn't put anyone under any pressure. How that works, we'll work through in the coming weeks, but we may choose, for example, that perhaps a pilot will be conducted on whatever happens in round eight and round 12," he said
