100 'NOT OUT' FOR SIMMO ON SATURDAY
14.08.08 15:28 Age: 12 min
Centre David Simmons will achieve a personal milestone when he runs out for his 100th NRL game on Saturday night when the Sharks play the New Zealand Warriors at Mount Smart Stadium.
A local junior from the De La Salle club who began his first grade career as a fleet-footed fullback back in round 22 of the 2003 season, Simmons has both bulked up and matured during the past five years and has this year played an integral part in the Sharks success during 2008.
In his 99 matches so far, all of which have been played in Sharks colours, Simmons has scored 49 tries, included in that tally seven four pointers this season.
Simmons has played all 20 games in the top grade in 2008 and this weekend faces another tough test up against Queensland Origin and former Test centre Brent Tait.
The Sharks headed across the ditch on Thursday with the same 17-man team that defeated South Sydney last Saturday, with Paul Stephenson also travelling as 18th man.
With the loss by the Roosters last weekend the Sharks moved into third position on the NRL ladder with four competition rounds remaining, with another win on Saturday night going a long way towards confirming a home semi final come September.
The Sharks however will travel to New Zealand fully aware of the difficult challenge that awaits them, with the Warriors having captured some impressive scalps on their home field in recent weeks.
Three weeks ago the Kiwis scored a narrow win over the first-placed Melbourne Storm, while just last weekend they edged out the Brisbane Broncos in what was another impressive performance.
While they came away winners at their last appearance at Mount Smart Stadium, the Sharks, like most teams who venture across the Tasman to take on the Warriors, have found it a tough place to win.
In the 10 previous matches played between the two sides, the home team has six victories, up against four for the Sharks. The overall head-to-head record stands at 12-10 in favour of the Sharks.
Disregarding their respective positions on the NRL ladder, the bookies have installed the 10th placed Warriors as $1.70 favourites for the match, with the Sharks at $2.10.
The Sharks v Warriors match, which will be refereed by Ton Archer, is scheduled for a 7.30pm kickoff NZ time on Saturday night and will be telecast live on Fox Sports in Australia from 5.30pm.
The Toyota Cup match between the same two teams will also be shown live on Fox, with the young Sharks looking for a change of fortune after enduring a tough run of outs in recent weeks.
The Toyota Cup match begins at 3.15pm Sydney time.
