New Zealand Herald columnist Chris Rattue has called on the New Zealand Rugby League to sack coach Steve Kearney.

Kearney and his tournament selectors made poor choices - such as overworking Issac Luke, failing to react to Bryson Goodwin's first game disaster, and playing Roger Tuivasa-Sheck on a leg injury that couldn't last one tackle in the final," Rattue wrote."But it was the absence of grand final fire which stuck out as the league World Cup concept - which a lot of people laugh at anyway - took a bashing via Australia's cringe-inducing dominance.
"Kearney has to go. The widespread suggestions that assistant coach Wayne Bennett was the key factor in the 2008 World Cup triumph have gnawed at his reputation. They will now envelop him. And some of us just can't forget the cynical, craven Harris axing."

Don't start Pou on this. Kearney is a great coach, he's just down on his luck at the moment.

Pou will handle it in his own way.

Step 1 is go after the character of the Journo.
Step 2 is to blame the subordinate staff of the head coach
Step 3 is to blame the lazy players and lack of leadership.

He would have merit in regard to all three arguments. That said the overlying factor is that Kearey just can't coach at the highest level. Even the 2008 team that won mention Bennett more than they do Kearney.

We know Kearney isn't a suitable head coach because he is unemployed in that role at an NRL club, despite having experience.

Reputation is everything in coaching, and after coaching Parra, Kearney's is f**ked.

So while I wouldn't say that head coaches don't have a great impact on their teams' performances, I would say that head coaches don't necessarily have a great impact. That's why you get Premiership winner Ricky Stuart, who after eleven years' experience becomes wooden spooner Ricky Stuart.

There is clear evidence that the fate of a coach is dependent on the people around him, which is why the best coaches are very picky about which clubs they go to.

When is the last time we got a coach with a good reputation? Brian Smith, Daniel Anderson and Ricky Stuart all had clouds hanging over them, and Kearney and Arthur's were/are both rookies.

 You think we won because of Sheens? Or NZ lost because of Kearney?

Rep footy has f**k all to do with coaching. That's why the best coaches only do it as a hobby.

I don't know what you're trying to say. Something about Sheens being a gun and Kearney being shit, I expect.

It's got nothing to do with why he's the Kiwis coach. In fact when he coached Parra he was the only rep coach that also had a club job. Once he got the arse there were no rep coaches who were also in charge of clubs. I'm sure they'd all (Sheens, Kearney, Meninga and Daley) rather be coaching NRL clubs than rep teams, and none of the NRL coaches would rather be coaching rep sides.

yet the best coaches do it as a hobby ? which is he ?

He's one of the best. We both know that.

Who cares? If they're coaching minnows then it's just a hobby, as I said.

Fair point about the England coach though, and I believe he has no club responsibilities.

This does not really pertain to the World Cup, but anyway ....

Thurston won the Golden Boot gong for 2013 and the World XIII has been named. Leaving out Hayne after his World Cup domination is a bit of a joke TBH.

2013 WORLD XIII: Billy Slater (Australia), Roger Tuivasa-Sheck (New Zealand), Greg Inglis (Australia), Jamie Lyon (Australia), Brett Morris (Australia); Johnathan Thurston (Australia), Cooper Cronk (Australia); Sam Burgess (England), Cameron Smith (Australia), James Graham (England), Sonny Bill Williams (New Zealand), Greg Bird (Australia), Paul Gallen (Australia).

Its interesting because it obviously takes the full year into consideration (Judas was selected, so its not just rep games), but GI was selected in a position that he played all of 5-6 games for the year. He could easily have been named fullback, and Hayne in the centres. Both players were more "outstanding" in those positions, than Slater was at fullback in my opinion.

Then again, it would be a travesty if Teflon Billy was excluded from a team.

You sound like an interesting fellow. Perhaps we could meet sometime to discuss dogs.

Speaks volumes for Jamie Lyons' standing in the game, to be named here (without having played any rep footy for the last several years).

You look at Kearney's record with Parramatta, and you have to think it was just a hobby. He certainly wasn't taking it seriously!
