The Eels dipped deep into the piggy bank to lure Matt Lodge back to Sydney but money couldn't sway the Origin hopeful who looks likely to repay Brisbane's faith in him with an extension.
Parramatta are in need of a front-rower after giving up club legend Tim Mannah to Wests Tigers and had a crack at bringing Lodge on board before the June 30 deadline, however the Sydney-born forward remains committed to Red Hill.
It means Plan B for the Eels.
Part of the production line of the Melbourne Storm system, prop Christian Welch has popped up on Parramatta's radar.
The Australian's Brent Read has revealed there were rumours Welch has signed a one-year extension at Melbourne, however there is uncertainty around his future after a change in management.
''Parramatta is obviously red-hot for Matt Lodge, they want to get a deal done for this year before June 30 but I don't think that is going to happen,'' Read told Sporting News.
''I think Lodge will end up staying in Brisbane but a potential alternative is Christian Welch. I said a couple of weeks ago that Welch had taken up his option [to stay in Melbourne] but there is a bit of confusion about that now.
''He was doing a deal on his own, he has now gone and got a manager and there is some talk he is back out there on the market and Parramatta is one of those clubs that is watching him pretty closely.
''I expect Lodge to stay in Brisbane and when and if that happens, then maybe Parramatta will have a good look at Christian Welch.''
Lodge will be the main beneficiary of James Roberts' exit from Brisbane which has opened up a heap of cap space for the club's retention plans, including the re-signing of Tevita Pangai Jnr.
There were many factors that Parramatta could offer to win Lodge over, but Brisbane won't be beaten.
''They threw plenty of money at him. I don't think Matty wanted to leave Brisbane,'' Read said.
''He's looking at buying a house at Kellyville near Parramatta's new base so it would have been really convenient for him, his family is down here but I think at the moment he just thinks Brisbane is the right club for him.
''I expect him to do a couple of years up there and then he will obviously look at possibly moving to Sydney and Parramatta will have a go at him again.''
