Forward leadership. Although he's at least a fifty fifty chance of being a better coach than Brad "we've just got to try harder" Arthur.

I still don't believe that it's proven he is a forward leader.

The Tigers are buying Mannah for his forward leadership. Is he a forward leader though? If he is, he has certainly provided little to Parra.

I think people who want Lodge for his forward leadership are going to be extremely disappointed.

Tigers can keep shopping at Jewels or Black 'n Gold while we're at Aldi's and IGA.

Parramatta's back-up plan after failed Matt Lodge bid

The Eels dipped deep into the piggy bank to lure Matt Lodge back to Sydney but money couldn't sway the Origin hopeful who looks likely to repay Brisbane's faith in him with an extension.

Parramatta are in need of a front-rower after giving up club legend Tim Mannah to Wests Tigers and had a crack at bringing Lodge on board before the June 30 deadline, however the Sydney-born forward remains committed to Red Hill.

It means Plan B for the Eels.

Part of the production line of the Melbourne Storm system, prop Christian Welch has popped up on Parramatta's radar.

The Australian's Brent Read has revealed there were rumours Welch has signed a one-year extension at Melbourne, however there is uncertainty around his future after a change in management.

''Parramatta is obviously red-hot for Matt Lodge, they want to get a deal done for this year before June 30 but I don't think that is going to happen,'' Read told Sporting News.

''I think Lodge will end up staying in Brisbane but a potential alternative is Christian Welch. I said a couple of weeks ago that Welch had taken up his option [to stay in Melbourne] but there is a bit of confusion about that now.

''He was doing a deal on his own, he has now gone and got a manager and there is some talk he is back out there on the market and Parramatta is one of those clubs that is watching him pretty closely.

''I expect Lodge to stay in Brisbane and when and if that happens, then maybe Parramatta will have a good look at Christian Welch.''

Lodge will be the main beneficiary of James Roberts' exit from Brisbane which has opened up a heap of cap space for the club's retention plans, including the re-signing of Tevita Pangai Jnr.

There were many factors that Parramatta could offer to win Lodge over, but Brisbane won't be beaten.

''They threw plenty of money at him. I don't think Matty wanted to leave Brisbane,'' Read said.

''He's looking at buying a house at Kellyville near Parramatta's new base so it would have been really convenient for him, his family is down here but I think at the moment he just thinks Brisbane is the right club for him.

''I expect him to do a couple of years up there and then he will obviously look at possibly moving to Sydney and Parramatta will have a go at him again.''

I don't think Lodge is a proven leader at this stage to be able to fix the issue that Parra is trying to address, but I certainly know that Welch isn't going to be that player either. Surely we have what Welch will provide in the players we already have? I guess he's something different for the same price.

If that's what you took from my comments you'd be a shithouse investor and an even worse gambler.

There's a whole range of probabilities between zero and 100%

If we need leadership we would be looking at players who potentially offer that. Go and have a listen to Lane's interview about the discussion he had with our management before they signed him.

Does Lane offer our squad leadership? Just like you I don't know. But there are merkins at our club who do know, and they would've had a fair idea before we signed him.

It's possible that these players have the potential for leadership that most of our existing players don't have.

Possible yes, but is it not just as or more likely that they don't?

We need proven leadership, otherwise we might as well just stick with the muppets we've got.

The fact we're after them tells me it's not, at least in the case of Welch.

Lodge is a big dude with a big motor, so we might just have been after him for that. Welch is nothing special as a player and I'm sure the club is aware of it.

Otherwise we'd just stick with the muppets we've got, as you say.

My point is any if these guys might've proven their leadership already. Just not to you.

Or me, obviously. Did any of us know Nathan Brown was a leader before he joined our club? In hindsight I'm certain at least some of you will say you did.

Maybe Brown just seems to have a small amount of leadership, because the remainder of the squad is essentially devoid of it.

I'm sure they try not to.

Like when you've got gastro at the footy and you need to squeeze past half a row of people to get to the aisle to go to the toilet. Sometimes a bit of poo squirts out in front of everyone. It can't be helped, but at least you can say I told you so.
