I've seen the "big ugly" team thing mentioned alot in a few threads....personally I think it is a myth.
The "Big Ugly" thing was really just something the media went wild with.....I know Brian said the words, but in the end it was just something the media got a bit over-excited about.
We DID need a couple of bigger players....Caylo was our biggest forward last season and he is NOT a really big player....every team needs some size to act as a battering ram at stages of games.
We bought Cannings, Moi Moi and Pearson as our "big ugly" guys.....I'd hardly say those are going overboard with a "big ugly" buying spree.....
- Canning: if he can get on the field, is actually very mobile for his size - he was a great buy if he hadn't broken his arm.
- Moi Moi: well he's had some good moments, but I think he came cheap and was always just a filler player who we might get lucky with
- Pearson: well he might be a good "team" man, but lets face it the legs don't carry the body that well any more....good attitude, but retirement can't come quickly enough.
Stapleton is NOT a big guy (he's not little, but he ain't a giant)....he was bought as a more mobile forward.....and I don't believe Muckert fits the big boppa category either.
In actual fact, we have NOT played a "big ugly" team alot this year.....Cannings has missed almost the entire season, Pearson also injured most the season.
Our most regular first grade forwards have been guys like:
- Hindy, Waggy, Vella, Stapleton, Hopkins, Peek, Tsoulos, Afamasaga (and I would add Caylo at the start of the season and Pearson of late).
This is NOT a big pack!!! ....Tsoulos is the only guy who has played alot of games who is a seriously big guy....and Hindy is 2nd biggest - lets not just call Hindy a big boppa.
So I believe the "big ugly" thing has no legs - its a myth that this has been our downfall....whether it was intended to happen or not, it never evenuated and I can't see any credibility in blaming it for our failure this season.
We are failing cos we aren't good enough...lots of things might be a factor in that:
- injuries
- lack of talent
- lack of effort (for a while - altho i think they guys seriously try of late)
- lack of a "take control" player - we have NO leadership
- a coach who is out of ideas
