The Captaincy?

Just interested to hear peoples thoughts on this issue

Should Cayless be immuned from being dumped from this gig?

Or Do we need a fresh change in this department?

Should it go to someone who is on the field for 80min, and is a talker (eg Finch)

Should an old timer like Burt be given a go? (sorta like a warren boland/chris anderson type captain from the wing)

I think in a year or two one of the keating boys will be up for it, Maybe give it to Matt next year? Didnt Cayless start when he was a 20yo?

We have some options out there

I'd like to see a more established member of the team as captain. Burt, IMO, would make a decent captain but his position in the team would be a question mark as to whether or not he could take the role.

Finch would be the obvious choice and I think would be well suited to the role.

Matt and Kris Keating could become good captaincy material but they are still adjusting to first grade.

There isn't a real standout out now in terms of a captain outside of Hindmarsh who has stated in the past he doesn't like the role or Finch. Hayne's attitude to the referees and touch judges wouldn't need to change considerably for him to be considered. No one else has cemented a position as such to justify being given the role long term.

In an ideal world, we would have had the foresight to recruit a real leader to the club and give him the gig.....

I think we need a change of some degree.

Burt would be good on-field cpatain in terms of relations with refs and talking to the team - he talks and directs his teammates on the field whether at fullback or wing. But it seems certain players didn't like the fact he was at fullback, so that option is probably out.

Finch to on-field captain. Cayless stays club captain, he and Hindy act as Finch's on-field deputies.

Bring Feleti into the "leadership/senior players group" or whatever it's called, along with the above guys incl Burt. Start grooming Feleti to take over leadership as Cayless and Hindy and Burt start to think about easing down their careers. Then Feleti can involve the Haynes and Inus as time moves on. And yeah, Matt and Kris Keating in the years following that.

I reckon we need joint skippers. Finch is a talker, but I still shudder to think of him interacting with the ref. He's just not good with the referee (or authority for that matter). Have Hindy as co captain to talk to the ref etc, and maybe Finch or Burt to do the talking behind the line.

Anyone know what sort of ranking cayless gets from the refs/officials as far as captaincy goes?

did they have some sort of poll on that ie refs ranking the captains?

cheers

The fact that Cayless has held the captaincy for 8 years shows he his stature within the club. Neither Smith, Taylor nor Hagan ever dropped him from that role and to me that says something.

I don't think it's fair for people like us, who don't know the players and don't know much about what goes on behind the scenes, to be commenting on who should lead the side. Finch seems like an ideal captain however he already has enough of a hands on role as it is I don't think putting extra pressure on him is the way to go.

Caylo has let himself down this season with his ordinary form.

Hindy for skipper for me

There has never been a standout other than Cayless to take over the captaincy. Hindmarsh has stated publically that he doesn't enjoy the role, his reaction to the referees (even though he has mellowed) is still bordering on dissent at times.

Cayless is a great club captain. His lack of talk on the field particularly when the team is behind the eightball and getting their asses kicked time and again illustrates the need for a player who can lead by both example and words.

Finch talks alot, and nothing is going to stop him whether he has a c next to his name, or if he was in crutchs. We need someone who will push from the front, words are words, we need someone who can inspire a team via his actions not his words.

Petro isn't a massive talker, Lockyer can't even talk, these guys are great leaders. Hayne, Mateo or Inu have the calibar to step up into the captain role aside from Cayless and Hindy. Finch is not a big game player, he is not the sort of player that will take a game by the scruff of the neck. Cayless used to be able to and may return back to that form, Hindy can but he may aswell be a joint leader with Cayless. Burt is in Finchs league and is no captain, and would be lucky to be in the team ATM. Inu is young and not as developed as a footballer as Hayne or Mateo IMO, and plays on the edges (not ideal for a Captain).

I don't see Hayne or Mateo ready to jump straight into the Captain role, but in 09 I would look to give them a more leadership role, and talk alot more. Then '10 would be when i would blood them and ease Cayless and Hindy out of that role. '10 is also when we will get a new coach IMO, and with a new coach i think you almost always need a new captain. Who ever was to come in, I would actually hope Hindy and Cayless would be on their way out because they have played behind one coach for 8 years, and another who just assume the same enviroment. We need a new fresh look, and as much as hindy and caylo will be parramatta greats, their service has been done IMO.

Finch for mine.

Definitely agree that if the off-season review achieves anything, there needs to be a bunch of things being shaken up and the captaincy needs to be one of those. Sometimes older players hand over the formal leadership when they realise its time for a breath of fresh air. It doesn't mean Cayless hasn't done a solid job at times and it doesn't make him less of an upstanding citizen. Happens all the time in leadership circles within all fields of industry.
