The Darren Lehmann Appreciation Thread

Is this man the closest there has ever been to a cricketing God? He's unfit, loves a smoke and a drink, yet piles up runs like few have in history.

Here are his Pura Cup scores this year:

159
47
5*
51
301*
49
104
102*

So his lowest score this year is 47. And his S/R hovers around 75. Quite remarkable for an overweight old bloke.

Today's ton was his 74th in first class cricket...just 26 to go now to join the Don as the 2nd Aussie to rack up a century of centuries!

So heres to Boof - arguably the most underrated cricketer in history and IMO the most talented Aussie batsmen outside of Ricky Ponting and maybe Mark Waugh of his generation.

Never liked the guy, and was hardly exceptional at test level. Unlucky to be very good at a time where we had an awesome side (see Beven, Cox etc).

Bevo definately more harshly treated, black labelled after 98 despite ammassing an incredible amount of pura cup runs.

He never got given a fair go at Test level. And when they did give him a chance he was on the wrong side of his career. But despite all that he still managed to finish with a career test average of 45.

He showed in Sri Lanka by murdering Murali just what a class player he is...it takes serious ability to do what he did to Murali and few have ever gotten the better of him in Sri Lanka to the extent Boof did. And neither did Bevan, although atleast he didnt have to wait to become the higehst run scorer in Australian first-class history before he got a chance in the Aussie test team.

The likes of Waugh, Ponting and now Clarke averaged in the 30's after a few years at test level. Fortunatley for Waugh and Punter they received a fair shot; as im sure Clarke will in the future. Boof never got that shot.

And Lolesi's right...he's by far the most likeable character ive come across in Australian cricket.

Very good player indeed, but its all about Hussey for me at the moment.
And there's another player that should probably have made his Test debut five years ago.

And whilst on the topic of players being robbed, Dean Jones comes to mind. Averaged 47 odd and was dumped. Damien Martyn is similar. If Brad Hodge is better than Marto then im the Pope's husband.

By the way, Lehmann was aided by playing his entire domestic career on a benign Adelaide pitch. Who knows if he would have the record he does if he'd played at the Gabba or WACA more often.

whats the point of this thread :?

Clarke is not in the side. Hussey, Hodge paid their dues a heck of a lot longer than Lehmann before getting a go, and theres talk of getting rid of Hodge already.

Bevan was treated worse, best ODI batsman, never given another go at test level despite piling on the runs in doemstic cricket

as far as SL (why you omitting India ?) are concerned, Martyn was far better and is not around either.

What is the point of you?

Clarke will get another go, though. "Hussey and Hodge paid their dues a heck of a lot longer..."? Did you not notice that Lehmann had scored the most first-class runs in Australian history before making his debut?

And as far as Sri Lanka goes and Martyn being far better, well Lehmann scored 375 runs at 62 compared to Martyn's 335 at 55.

Do you want to say anything else non-factual while you're at it?

both did great in the SL series, I asked you why you omitted India tour, which you avoided. I know why, here ya go
India 2004
Martyn 50.34, Lehmann 26.40.

next
Both averages low 40's against NZ at home
But against Pakistan?
Martyn 103.33. Lehmann 9.33

How does that stack up to being non factual ?

Who got AB test player of the year? (many thought he should have got the AB medal), that also non fictional?

what about Hussey 15000 first class runs then a test debut?

What about Bevan?

I dont question Lehmann should have had a better go in his career, but theres a few others who were hard done by also, not just Boof.

Is there a way to filter first class statistics? I'd like to see Lehmann's record home and away. I would like to see if i'm correct about Adelaide Oval inflating his average.
