Seen the first episode, it's just like The Wire and Treme in a new setting.

No complaints here, high quality TV.

It makes you think NY is just hoes and pimps. Lacked originality for mine but I'll watch a few more.

It's specifically about the sex trade and it's set in an area of NYC which was rampant with that culture, of course hoes and pimps are going to feature heavily. Going by the reputations of the people involved, it would have been researched and written based around factual people and events.

From wiki:
Wikipedia said:
From the late 1950s until the late 1980s, 42nd Street, nicknamed "The Deuce", was the cultural center of American grindhouse theaters, which spawned an entire subculture. The book Sleazoid Express, a travelogue of the 42nd Street grindhouses and the films they showed, describes in detail the unique blend of people who made up the theater-goers, depressives hiding from jobs, sexual obsessives, inner-city people seeking cheap diversions, teenagers skipping school, adventurous couples on dates, couples-chasers peeking on them, people getting high, homeless people sleeping, pickpockets...[9] while the street outside the theatres was populated with: phony drug salesman ... low-level drug dealers, chain snatchers ... [j]unkies alone in their heroin/cocaine dreamworld ... predatory chickenhawks spying on underage trade looking for pickups ... male prostitutes of all ages ... [t]ranssexuals, hustlers, and closety gays with a fetishistic homo- or heterosexual itch to scratch ... It was common to see porn stars whose films were playing at the adult houses promenade down the block. ... Were you a freak? Not when you stepped onto the Deuce. Being a freak there would get you money, attention, entertainment, a starring part in a movie. Or maybe a robbery and a beating.[9]

For much of the mid and late 20th century, the area of 42nd Street near Times Square was home to activities often considered unsavory,[10] including peep shows.

Hard to believe this is on tele. That potato soup scene.

Good to see Jackie Aprile back, and Sobotka from the Wire along with a few others in totally different roles. Those two - straight lifts.

Enjoying this series.

Its getting interesting, I guess not too many pilots really get you in but hey, who doesn't like pimps and hoes especially ones who want to make "movies"

This show is back for a second season and if you didn't see the first season do yourself a favour and watch it.

One of the best shows, if not the best, on TV last year.

The guy that created it was the guy behind The Wire and this show is just as gritty, with a brilliant collage of misfit and flawed characters. Even a few ole The Wire actors get a gig.

Set in New York in the early 70's at the time the porn industry was just kicking off, the portrayal of the pimps and hookers in the show is outstanding.

Two of my least favourite actors James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal star in this show and they were enough to turn me off it initially, but after being tipped into it by a mate, I gave it a go and I have now had to reassess my assessment of both.

If you like well scripted, well acted drama in a gritty setting.....this show is up your alley

Huge fan of The Wire, finally got around to finishing it after this thread reminded me, only watched the pilot before.

Halfway through season 1, it's very good so far, lives up to the quality of The Wire and the under appreciated Treme.
