i think if utai or any half decent winger replaces peterson... we have a chance !! 200-250K ? (i think i last read he was on 100K when they got busted for cheating the cap)

orford is absolute class. 400K a bit much though ?

willie talau is class. he'd be playin in england right, wouldn't we have to offer him huge kahunas ?

glen morrison is class, but how much would we have to offer him ? it's like everytime u watch a north qld game all the signs say his name. they must love him up there

i reckon we have a chance of getting orford with that money. but all these players the tigers (who have space and sponsors as well !) would want as well. 400K for orford is OK since he is a team-changer. but the rest i wouldn't offer more than 250K.

i guess we could get them if we:
- release dykes (WOOHOO 300K and no more running sideways)
- release thorman (200-250K?)
- downgrade vella's contract (350K? tsoulos has been killing him)
- sack peterson (nfi)
- make luke burt take another paycut
- release widders (if u get morrison this would make sense)
- release driftwood (pearson, wise etc..)

i think making luke burt take another paycut is slack, but the way he's been playing he's lucky we're paying him at all.

that fact you think Thorman is on 200-250 shows how little of an idea you have.

If released Dykes and Petersen will need payouts those payouts will count against the cap. If they payout Dykes 200 then they only gain 100

also Vella and/or Burt need to agree to paycutsd Fitzgerald just can't go ahead and downgrade their contracts.

It still clearly demonstrates that intense coaches shouldn't overstay at one club though.

In theory it would not be impossible for us to get those 5 player - Utai, Talau, Ridell, Orford & Morrison.

Now i'm not 100% sure how Lyon's contract will count towards our cap but basically I worked out that we have around this much to spend;

1. $985,000 with Lyon's contract still COUNTED towards our cap.

2. $1.24m if Lyon's contract NOT COUNTED towards our cap.

Now, add to that a release for Dykes (+$300k) and a possible downgrade of Vella's contract (say from $275k to $175k) that would give us a further $400k to spend.

So, now that gives us either;

1. $1.38m, or
2. $1.63m

Taking the worst case scenario, $1.38m, we could make the following offers;

Orford - $400k
Riddell - $225k
Morrison - $225k
Utai - $185k
Talau - $185k

TOTAL = $1.22m

Leaving us $165,000 to spend on re-signing other players coming of contract. If we don't count Lyon's contract to our cap we will still have $440,000 left to spend.

By the way, i'm not an accountant :lol:

BTW - I cannot see Vella just giving away $100K....would you give up $100K you are rightly entitled to?

I think:
- $400K on Orford is too much.
- $225K on Riddell may not be enough...I reckon he'd want at least $250K
- Utai - I wouldn't want him anyway
- Talau - hmmmm, might be useful, but might cost more than $185K to get back from England

I'd rather us try to keep some juniors....so we won't win a GF in the next year or 2 - stiff shit, I'd rather us start to be competative with some young guys.

i think making luke burt take another paycut is slack, but the way he's been playing he's lucky we're paying him at all.

-Dykes is on big money, if the club release him I doubt he will go without a substantial payout
- Thorman wouldn't be getting anywhere near that amount of cash. Id say he'd be under 100K
- Agree on Vella, he isn't a 350K player anymore
- You can't just sack Matt Peterson if he has a contract, which he does
- Burt already signed for the next 2 years, it's a bit late to make him take a paycut now

It's not a question of giving anything away. I was under the impression that Vella's contract expires at the end of this year so he will be negotiating a new contract with us for next year and beyond. If so I'd offer him around $175k -$200k max because I don't believe he should be on anymore than that given he is no longer a rep player and has hardly set the world on fire in recent times. If he thinks he can get more (...at Souths) then he's entitled to shop around but I think $175k is about right IMO.
