The Fibros and the Silvertails

WORLD PREMIERE

What starts out as the story of a late-70s feud between two football teams, Wests and Manly, turns into a film about class and corruption. A new coach, Roy Masters, has just taken over at Wests and he's brought something new to the sport - the language of class war. He coins a phrase - Fibros vs. Silvertails - to describe the struggle of working class Wests against the elite of the city's northern and eastern suburbs.

In contrast to Wests, Manly are a winning and wealthy club. The 1978 rugby league season is at the heart of this documentary, when violence on the field, controversial refereeing decisions and clashes outside the game, were commonplace. This is social history, sports history and political essay all in rolled into one.

I went tonight and i thought it was a great film.

Could you tell was it a footy type crowd, or a film fest crowd, was there anyone in footy gear, either team?

It was a footy crowd.

There were ex-players there who had been interviewed in the film.

Quite a few people in footy gear there. It appeared that Magpies fans outnumbered Manly fans.

They had a Q&A with the film maker, John Gray, and Roy Masters at the end of the film.
