The NRL has once again shown it is not sitting still when it comes to innovation.
Vlandys is a smart bastard![]()

I love Rugby league but I actually can appreciate NFL and have at stages tried to get into it. Not a big UFC fan but I respect it. Love boxing when it's actual boxers.Imagine one day they liked the rules so much they ran an off season nrl comp with their clubs it would still be massive
Meeting the boss of the nfl and guys like Dana white is good publicity for league anyway
Dana is huge globally
In reality, the NFL has already been helping heaps! Now it's official, we can hopefully see a ramp up. I'm starting to get excited about our prospect in the USA.![]()

It's interesting that the NFL see themselves becoming a global sport, not in terms of pro leagues everywhere, or participation all around the world, just in terms of supporters and viewers, they accept what they are and run with it.
The AFL could do some cross promotion with... umm..
Netball?
I always try to make the point with idiots like Perth Red that these crowd figures or participation figure and comparisons that are made with soccer or AFL are stupid because our sport much like the NFL , Boxing or UFC doesn't live and die by those numbers. It's interesting that the NFL see them becoming a global sport, not in terms of pro leagues everywhere, or participation all around the world, just in terms of supporters and viewers, they accept what they are and run with it.
Now, I know RL isn't in the same stratosphere, but it's in a similar situation. Not a bad sport to learn from and partner with. If we can get a couple of conferences in Australia that include the NZ and PNG markets and forge some sort of European conference with the strong English clubs and a couple of French clubs, either through NRL ownership or an extremely close alignment with the RFL, we could then push for more and more eyeballs on the product. Seems the be the strategy PVL is pursuing.
Yep completely agree mate. The NRL brand is what we should be pushing hard, which is why I hope Europe gets on board and we could really start to see some traction. Union has worked hard , but has hit a wall because the product is not entertaining enough, we don't have that problem.I always try to make the point with idiots like Perth Red that these crowd figures or participation figure and comparisons that are made with soccer or AFL are stupid because our sport much like the NFL , Boxing or UFC doesn't live and die by those numbers.
Rugby League is mostly a spectators sport primarily for Television. So long as participation is high enough to get good talent and there's a crowd big enough to set a scene, it's party time.
The NFL are big in Australia ( 6 million viewers was quoted I think) yet almost nobody plays it.
How many UFC fighters exist? How many in the crowd? Yet it's massive.
Rugby League can do very well all over the world because it is a fantastic spectators sport.
Yeah exactly. That's why the Vegas venture is a 5 year deal. Someone sitting a bar having a drink half watching it one year, the next year, oh yeah this kinda cool . By the 3rd year they're starting to understand what's going on and actually watch till the end. 4th and 5th year they're starting to actually learn a bit on their own about the clubs involved, comp structure, geography. Maybe then actually trying to follow it through the year.Yep completely agree mate. We just need more eyeballs on the game. I'm not as delusional as AFL fans that think all it takes to convert anyone is for them to see one game, but getting the game exposed to more new viewers will definitely capture some and that seems to be what PVL is up to.
Thinking about this with regard to the broadcast in america going forward, now that Newscorpse no longer owns foxtel (they do have 6% of DAZN tho) will V'landys be able to keep the game on the fox network in the US?You need repeated exposure.
We had a big increase on viewership from the first year, importantly PVL is trying to. Make it bigger and better every year, working hard to market it better..!
By year 5 hopefully we're dialled in ! And we go another 5 years.
As PVL says " just one percent " ..
That wasn't expected to happen overnight!
Consistency!
It's not in our imagination- this is the greatest game on earth!
