It was fairly out of character for me to really stick it up our beloved Sharks. And for those who share my disappointment it is with good reason. I would have to say that would have been the worst round 1 game that I have ever seen Cronulla play. We were beaten 30-6 by the Dragons in 2001, we were outplayed by the better team on the day. Without showing disrespect to the Tigers who were worthy winners, the quality of opposition was really there for the taking.
For me, the amount of positive press that came from the club after Anderson had been sacked indicated that a solid start to the season was in store. The talk didn't match performance, and thats where the disppointment takes over.
However, as they say in football "there is always next week". I read the thoughts of another Rugby League supporter who said that they beleive that Canterbury have put all of their energy into playing their arch enemies and could well be ripe for the pickings. I quite agree with that.
I really think its time to forget round 1 and get in and support the boys for round 2. There were some positives to come out of the game. I know Lomu dropped the ball at critical times, but some of his second phase play was excellant. If we can get some outside backs trailing him, it will work beautifully.
I thought that the 3 front rowers worked well, Stevens was excellant in carting the ball up, Nutley was disciplined and Beattie did have a crack. A Galloway/Lomu second row combination is an exciting prospect. I don't beleive that we have a problem in the forwards.
I think the backs have work to do, but as we all know the backline that played on Saturday isn't our best starting 7. I have no problems with BK getting less ball in attack, but we need another ball player to take more responsibilty.
For what its worth this would be my team against the Bulldogs for round 2 subject to injury.
