The Moltzen myth

I'm not a Tigers fan, but, has anyone really ever seen Tim Moltzen play a good or dominating game? I just cannot see what all the hype is about this player. Maybe he's another one of Tim's boys

He's no f**king fullback, that's clear as day to everyone except Sheens.

Yes he's trying to manufactre a fullback. In today's game a fullback needs to have some ball playing skills, unfortunately that does not mean u can throw a half in there (after being out for a year mind u) and hope for the best.

He did nothing right tonight, scared ro run, scared to tackle, scared to catch the ball on rhe full. We can't blame him though he just wants to play.

What astounds me is that there is a fullback on the bench and when he came on the entire back line gets reshuffled to accommodate.

Never has been and never will be a fullback. Sheens lost the game tonight. One prop on the bench and playing people out of position cost us.

I posted this last week:

This Moltzen love fest is really starting to sh*t me. He is going to end up a very good player, but the way some people go on about him it is like he is Peter Sterling and Andrew Johns rolled into one.

He isn't a fullbacks arsehole. He can't tackle, he is scared of contact and his defensive positioning at the back is absolutely f**king hopeless. Sometimes I wonder what people watch - Moltzen was largely TERRIBLE at fullback when he played there, and his kick returns were embarrassing.

Anyone who thinks he is a better fullback than McKinnon is on drugs. McKinnon may not have much pace these days but he is a natural fullback and IMO he has played VERY well this season and has copped much unnecessary criticism. He is a great support player who is always sniffing around the ruck for offloads, which Moltzen does not. He made over 200 metres against the Roosters and was our best player that day and still straight after that game there were people calling for an underdone Moltzen to play fullback, unbelievable.

And if McKinnon was to ever get dropped or injured, then Mitch Brown should be fullback, not Moltzen.

The teams effort last night was ordinary to put it mildly, but Moltzen effort was possibly the worst fullback
display i have ever witnessed. How can you have a fullback that refuses to catch bombsl in the NRL and expect to win.

That appears correct, but a much better five-eighth than John Sutton i`ll give you the tip.

Yeah well he will never play five-eighth here.

I honestly can't see a spot for him in a fully fit side, and throwing him into a key position like fullback because "he is too good to leave out so he has to play somewhere" is absolute garbage.

Sure Fullback is not his posn. but last nights game was disgraceful. He dogged it. Should be dropped back to NSW cup for a month and someone buy him a heart pump.

Games like last night are proving you correct that Moltzen isn`t cutting the mustard as a fullback, but we need to try something as we haven`t had a class fullback since Hodgo left.
I`m sick of saying this but Wade Mckinnon is no longer capable of coming up with the game breaking plays in the big games which we will be needing to win this years competition, so we need to search for an option which will.
Many a decent fullback has been manufactured, Anthony Minichiello & Kurt Gidley spring to mind.

How about Mullaney? They say he's small but so is Nathan gardener...Matt Bowen...Preston Campbell (not that I'm saying he's in their class yet) but if it is all about size then Hodgo wouldn't have gotten a run

I like Jake Mullaney and i`d love to see him be given a go. My concerns are that he`s also a little suspect under the high ball and he hasn`t yet been dominating State League games like I thought he would be.
On the plus side he`s got massive talent, he`s young and he`s a good learner. I can`t see the harm in giving him a shot in the top grade even next week.

Totally agree, state cup for Moltzen, and Sheens you are still the most stubborn idiotic coach I have seen, they say the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result(Moltzen at 1).

Thanks for the heads up on Mullaney's progress, I haven't had the chance to see any State Cup games yet. BRET have a potentially great side but I notice they've had a lot of chopping and changing (probably due to all the call ups to first grade), so maybe that's affecting Mullaney's combinations. Shame to hear about being suspect under the high ball - I reckon being able to take a bomb might be enough to win someone the Number 1 this week.

yeah, look I was saying he was definitely the answer but I felt sorry for Moltzen last night. He was terrible. Every time a bomb went up I thought...here we go. And he didn't get any help from Latu or Utai (who ran strongly but can't catch a high ball).

He's definitely not a fullback and he's shown that he's probably the 4th best at the club, time and time again.

The gameplan was just so awful though. Moltzen has the ability to be an effective fullback in attack only because of his good running game and speed as well as support play, but it seemed they went out of their way just to not give him the ball. He touched the ball maybe 5 times in the game, 3 of them when he moved to the centres. If you're going to play a good ball player at fullback, you let him do some ball playing and chiming in. You don't just cut him out or dummy to him every time you go near him.

I thought tyhe entire point of moving Meaney to 5/8 in State Cup was to give him a ball playing edge to his game and make him the replacement. He is a natural fullback with great support lines and a real fullbacks instinct. Sheens is in his own little world though

It is all about size. Why else did Sheens treat Shannon Gallant so badly? As for Hodgson, he was already an established first grader and goal kicker who'd played rep football before he came to the Tigers.
