There is a danger to having a one sided coverage of League - look at the 'us against them' attitude of Brisbane fans fosterd by the Courier Mail - but having a great coverage andmasses of positive League stories to read over your cornflakes can be a great feeling.
It is no secret that Joey Johns had one of his best ever games this weekend, and this is how the Newcastle Herald reported on the game.
Frontpage headline - Johns Cracks His Own Record.
Under this headline was a short sum up of his point scoring and a refferal to the 24 page sports liftout for further details. (12 pages of League)
Sporting Liftout - Page One is a fullpage photo of Joey with arms spread ala JC and a sunset like effect in the background. The Caption was - Johns 34 Raiders 26
Joey's record-breaking romp p24-25.
Inside the sporting liftout was a double page spread with several photos and two major articles - Super 7 is our Don Bradman- Sargent gives Joey ultimate accolade
and - Gobsmacked Elliott left marvelling at Johns
The backpage of the sporting liftout has an editorial headlined - Joey makes point - which states that Brian Smith said that Joey may break Jason Taylor's pointscoring record 'if he plays till he is forty'. The editor, Kevin Cranson, says the former schoolteacher should check his maths and goes on to prove that, if Johns continues to score as he has this season, he will pass Taylor at age 30 in season 2004, the last year of his present contract with the Knights.
The coverage of the Herald is one-sided, but as a Newcastle fan I love it. They rarely bother with negative stories and give great coverage of all League games.
If every fan had the chance to get positive coverage of the game like we do in Newcastle the game would be in great shape.
