The NRL clubs need to sign more Poms

Over the years many Poms have been a great success in Australian rugby league -- from Dick Huddart to Malcolm Reilly to Ellery Hanley to Garry Schofield there have been many champions. At the moment there are many Poms who have performed well, even if not consistently --- the three Burgess brothers (Souths), James Graham (Canterbury), Josh Hodgson and Elliot Whitehead (Canberra) have been standouts. Mike Cooper and Gareth Widdop (St George-Illawarra) have been good at times.

Most of them have added something to the entertainment component of the entire competition, especially Sam Burgess, James Graham and Josh Hodgson.

NRL clubs ought to sign more Poms. The two England wingers Jermaine McGilvary (Huddersfield) and Ryan Hall (Leeds) are top quality. So too is prop Chris Hill (Warrington). Those three, plus five eighth George WIlliams (Wigan), could add something to an NRL club. Centre Kallum Watkins (Leeds) is another possibility.

SIgning them would not only enhance their NRL clubs' performances, but their experience away from Super League and in the more intense NRL competition would strengthen the England national team, which is desirable for the future of international rugby league.

Need to? Hardly.

But if I was a club like Newcastle who is struggling to attract good players I'd definitely be going after a few, and not just the England test players. They should be looking at the best young players from England and France and try to pick up a few for the future and maybe target a Ben Currie or someone like that who is already good but not pushing 30. The problem is the bigger SL clubs like to tie players up long term so they can either keep them or ask a fee for them and the idea of paying a transfer fee

If you look at what Canberra has done. They were in the same boat of struggling to attract players, but they've picked up guys like Hodgson Whitehead, who were already test players but not too old, and they also got guys like Soliola. Now they're finding it easier because they've got a good side.

More Poms in the NRL would mean a better England side, not a better NRL

The real winner would be the NSW/Qld Cup comps

Given Soward couldn't hold down a second division place not sure what his opinion says about just how average he is.

Jamie Soward has poured scorn on English rugby league, stating that the competition is 10 years behind the NRL.

Soward recently retired after a short stint with the London Broncos.

The halfback also attacked the Championship, saying it was 20 years behind the NRL.

Soward told radio station Triple M: "The Super League - and we saw it in the Four Nations - is ten years behind the NRL, and the competition lower than the Super League is about 20 years behind.

"The Super League players just aren't good enough, to be honest. I don't know if they train hard enough.

"And you saw in Wayne Bennett's pressers - a lot of them just aren't good enough.

"They don't play the consistent footy week in, week out against quality sides, which is what we do in the NRL."

Soward said he didn't enjoy his recent spell with the Broncos, compared with his time with the club in Super League in 2013.

played for the Roosters, Dragons and Panthers, representing NSW in State of Origin.

I dunno where I heard it but apparently Nathan Brown clued Ricky and the Raiders into Hodgson and Whitehead. Obviously before he got the Knights job but shit Browny must wish he kept that to himself.

Must have been his back injury. He carried a pretty average side into week 3 in 2014. No-one drops that far in just two years.
