The Origin 'Grind' and the 'Football' at Internationals

I have more passion for wanting international RL to succeed than whether QLD or NSW win. Origin is great but it is just the same two teams every year and the build up for it gets a tad tedious, particularly when it starts overshadowing the NRL comp weeks before the 1st game.

Well why doesn't the hype exist for Tests.
It's there for the ANZAC Test but not the 4 Nations.
you could have easily gone this whole 4 Nations tournament without even knowing it was on.

And the fact most NRL players would rather play origin than test matches.

This is changing. Increasingly kiwis are opting for country over state, because Origin means less to them than wearing the black jersey. That much was certainly evident on Saturday... For Australian players it may still be Origin first, but if we carry on with that attitude the Kangaroos will become more and more vulnerable to the point that the Kiwis and Poms will beat us regularly.

I think Origin is starting to lose it's original purpose (maybe not it's appeal for many though) and I'm not sure how it will evolve without changes to the concept. The origin teams are not THE best 34 players in the NRL and it's pretty much alienating many of the top talent in the NRL from playing in league's biggest spectacles.

This is the key point about origin now.

Australia are not the best international team and there are now numerous clubs who have non Aussies among the best players.

So anytime you hear anything about pinnacles and origin you know it is someone talking rubbish.

On the styles, international games have better players playing better rugby.
Simple as that. ;-)

Thanks for that Matty Johns.

Seriously, why blokes like you, who are apparently fans of Rugby League, seem intent to undermine the international game at every opportunity I just don't understand...

The reason international League hasn't had the hype of Origin is simple: competitiveness and perception. In the 80s and 90s the Kangaroos rarely dropped a game and NZ had a virtually non-existent player pool. But now the NRL is flooded with Kiwis and the have their own club team. A fact that has seen the Kiwis beat Australia in tournaments more often the NSW has won Origin over the past 10 years.

The real problem is largely now one of perception. The Kiwis beat us regularly, and whilst some people still think international League isn't competitive, that fact is giving the game more interest. And that's why in spite of all the negative talk from guys like you this series broke crowd and ratings records for the 4N.

I award you 0 points for comprehension.

The fact is at the moment State of Origin is bigger than International Rugby League, it's far more popular, that can't be disputed.
For IRL to grow it needs to be questioned why this is and what can be done to fix it. But it seems like nobody is bothered to do much about it anyway.
Players having more pride in playing for their State than their Country is an unusual scenario but it's derived from how rubbish International Rugby League was for a long time. As soon as more focus is put on the pride and passion of playing for your country, that's when we will see this reversed. Until then the public and the players will always place Origin at number one.

England let themselves and the International down too.
If Samoa, Fiji and Png had the quantity of players England do and the same money thrown at their development that England does then England wouldn't even qualify for the 4 Nations. They are way behind where they should be.

This is only true for Australian players though isn't it? Because we sure as heck haven't seen the Burgess boys in a hurry to give up their England jumpers to play bloody Origin have we?

That's correct, but it isn't due to the players themselves because it is a widespread mentality.
We don't know what would happen if England had an equivalent of State of Origin that's just as hyped.

It's because of the story that goes with Origin, the whole State against State and Mate against Mate. There's nothing like that for League.

I also think timing has a lot to do with it.
Like I said, ANZAC Tests are a lot more hyped than the 4 Nations - I think by the end of the year the players just wanna f**k off and have a break, which is understandable. But also representing Australia on the ANZAC weekend has more story to it than a 4 Nations Test.

A 3 test series between England and NZ these days would be FAR more entertaining than origin. Their last 2 games have been the 2 best rep matches I've seen in over 10 years.

Origin used to be an exhibition in what the best attacking players could do when you put them all together. Now its just all the most hated parts of our game dialled up to 11... but most don't notice as the rivalry between the 2 states has become so huge.

Internationals are far more entertaining and a much better display of actual football.
