The Peta Hiku hall of fame

One of the issues with Peta Hiku's current defensive issues is that it triggers anxiety in me caused by a long line of terrible defenders in Warriors jerseys. It was at a point when basically all you had to do was pass the ball 2-3 times from the middle and you'd probably score.

Who stands out as being the biggest defensive liability for you?

The name that immediately comes to mind for me is Jerome Ropati. His defensive combination with Manu Vatuvei was the thing that nightmares were made of.

Obviously Maloney was awful too, but in a way that you'd allow a half to be.

In recent memory Kata and Ken, oh and Bodene.

They all played together. We were no good.

Dane Nielsen was awful on attack, but was his defence an issue?

You almost don’t want to remember

tbh, Kata and Johnson have both improved immensely on defence and may not get the credit they respectively deserve.

Bahaha great thread, what a chance to re-live some 'great' memories

Bad Defenders

Manu - Always tried 100% and learned to fix those terrible hands, but had that incredibly annoying habit of leaping out of the line so you always needed a strong centre inside him.
Ropati - ... Was not the strong centre Manu needed. He was ok defensively for a while but towards the tail end of his career became a rank jersey grabber.
Fisiahi - Rocked on up from juniors and got the shock of his life when asked to defend like an actual fullback
Tui - Forget tackling, he completely failed to even read play and position himself, U-12 stuff
Ken - Improved now but was lucky to be under Kearney & allowed a very long stint of filth to sort himself out
Kata - He's lazy, capable of good defence but is one of the first to go when things get bad. Been ok this year.
Bodene - Even lazier, he's much better than he ever chose to be for us, hated this guy
Tomkins - A trier, but too small and outclassed to even tackle Ben Barba standing still
Gelling - Maybe not a big enough sample size, but that Storm effort was a joke
Godinet - Pure turnstile, anyone of any size just rolled right over him
Mason Lino - Some horrid defence was disguised by Harris and co., but they can only do so much

Hiku might be worse than everyone on that list, which seems unimaginable.

Bad Defender Myths

Johnson - Honestly I don't recall him ever being that bad. Sure he's let a couple through in his early days but he's always gotten better and does a better than reasonable job for a half.

Maloney - Some terrible stats but it's not as bad as it looks, there was a good article somewhere about how his huge missed tackle count is skewed because he's often the first man in who then falls away, but does enough in the contact for others to finish the job. With us in 2012 he was always left to handle someone like Paul Gallen on his own and got expectedly humped, hardly his fault because he actually bothered to try.

Neilson - Defending was literally the only thing he could do.

Yeah, if memory serves, Nielsen was touted as a defensive centre. Can’t remember him fixing our problems on that side though

Also, I don’t doubt Hiku is a better defender than Lino- but he is expected to be.

Sorry to interrupt.
In breaking news it was announced that the new Peta Hiku Hall of Fame has missed it's target
and is now situated on the southern touchline facing the wrong way. Whilst this may not give a good view of the game it does allow spectators to catch the late afternoon sun. (Oh the irony.)

Johnson was only ever a bad defender in his first season or two, which applies to most halves.

People forget we spent Stacey Jones entire career hiding him on the flanks, where he occasionally got brutally exposed by teams with big wingers (Adam Mcdougall springs to mind)

On Manu, I think his limitations on d were almost purely because of his size and insides- he never had inside men he could trust and being a big guy knew he couldn’t defend well laterally or back-pedalling so he always jammed up. If he spent more time outside a competent defensive centre he’d probably have looked ok. He definitely wasn’t tackle-shy.

No, the enduring memory of Vatuvei without the ball in hand was him rushing in off his wing- and either nailing his target or flailing his arms and waving someone on through. Still, not always his fault.

That’s my point though- I think most of the time he did that because J-Ro left him covering an overlap so he had to rush in and try to nail the inside man. He got hung out to dry a LOT.

And that problem compounds itself - when you’re always getting hung out to dry by your centre, coming off your wing is going to become habitual, even when it’s not needed.

and then kept his jumper

thats the difference between Kearney and the other coaches in the comp
Lol...fair point.

To be optimistic - Kearney persisted with Ken last year and it's paid off. He's obviously counting on Hiku to sort out his defence once and for all.

Hiku was at Penrith, Manly and in the UK, surely he played under some solid coaching?

As for Inu (he got mentioned) I thought he could put a decent hit on.
