With the Forums Sevens (F7s) now well into the off season, I thought it might be timely to give teams an idea of our plans for 2004.
Next month, there will be a few announcements:
1.) We will issue invitations to teams for the 2004 season
This will be done mid-late January and be to teams who seem to be on the 'right track'. A lot of things will be taken into consideration - and every team will be given every chance to be part of the competition. In basic terms, invitations will be issued to those teams that seem to be progressing well in their recruitment campaign.
One way to impress (but by no means the only way) is by playing trials. A trial match is a fair indication that the team and its captain are in good communication with each other.
If any teams want to play some trials, be sure to let either myself or The Backpacker know so we can set you up with a referee and a match thread.
2.) The 2004 Draw
Once the teams are decided, The Backpacker will be putting together the draw.
Round one of the F7s will kick off at approximately the same time as the NRL competition. A round of the F7s will happen once every fortnight until the F7s season is finished.
The draw will include representative matches and the plan is arrange these so they don't clash with the regular rounds.
3.) The Forum Sevens Rules
The old rules will be revised by F7s management in mid-January with the new rules being posted at around the same time as the draw. Team captains, delegates and referees will hold an open discussion about this in the F7s management forum.
4.) The Forums Sevens web site
Once the teams, the draw and rules are finalised, Leagueunlimited will host a sub-domain for the F7s competition. The website will have news, matches, prizes, anecdotes, most valuable players, plus much more. We also plan on making the new website interactive with 'back-chat' functions.
5.) The prizes and sponsorship
Before the F7s competition kicks off, we will be able to reveal the prizes for the best players etc.
In 2003, we gained the help of a few sponsors to throw in some prizes for the top three posters of the competition... these included a jersey, computer hardware and some pre-paid internet time.
In 2004, we plan to extend the prizes into other areas of the competition and the prizes promise to be bigger and better than ever before.
No doubt, there'll be more discussion between now and when the 2004 F7s comp gets underway. If there's any queries or suggestions, please don't hesitate to post your thoughts here.
Cheers.
