Will he go down as the Poms best ever batsman? Modern era certainly will be you would think
Hasn't turned 31 yet. 108 tests, 9221 runs at 50.38

Could be a record breaking year for Joe, for most calendar runs
Currently has 1398 runs at 69.90 - 6 tons (11 tests)

Current record
2006 (11 tests) Mohammed Yousuf 1788 runs at 99.33 - 9 tons
2nd spot
1976 (11 tests) Sir Vivian Richards 1710 runs at 90.00 - 7 tons

Joe still has 5 tests to play this year

He's had a great year, the big difference being able to convert his 50s into 100s which he was previously horrible at.

Probably wouldn't be in the same class as Hammond, Hutton or Barrington from yonks ago but as a modern player better than Cook and on par with Pieterson I think.

The likes of Gatting, Gooch and Gower don't have the stats to match Root or Pieterson etc but they played in the Windies era of the 80s and were pretty decent too. I think he just shades them too.

So on conclusion on track to be the best lesbian batsman to play for England since Chappelli was a boy.

He’s a great player and might well break all the records, but most of the Poms best are from bygone eras imo

Hammond, Hutton, Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Barrington,May for a start all probably better than Root,Jaapie Kev and Cook, Cook at best is their 4th best opener behind Hobbs, Sutcliffe and Hutton… alongside the likes of Gooch and Boycott

This season has been remarkable for Root though, against quality and with nobody helping him much

Can Mr Root do it? Most test runs in a calendar year
Has one test to play

Currently on 1630 runs @ 62.69 - 6 tons

2006 (11 tests) Mohammed Yousuf 1788 runs at 99.33 - 9 tons
2nd spot
1976 (11 tests) Sir Vivian Richards 1710 runs at 90.00 - 7 tons

So he needs 158 runs.
It will be close but tbh, he looks shot.
In the post game interview he looked like he had been wandering around the desert for 57 days he was that thin, red and dishevelled.

Then again if it's the typical mcg road he might score 1580 runs.

How many tests has root played this year.

He has probably also played more tests this year then what smithy has played since sandpaper gate which is just 15 tests since march 2018

Not downplaying the achievement but if you play as much England has this year he is probably going break a few records.

It's like Lyon getting 400 wickets

If you give a park cricketer a gazillion chances at a higher level, he will eventually snare wickets

I don't think he will get there, but its been an outstanding year. Even given the amount of tests played, he hasn't had any freebies (Away v Sri Lanka, India, Australia, Home v NZ, India). They would not have won a test if not for Root.

Looking at Yousuf, 9 test centuries in a year (11 tests) is pretty impressive.

Very impressive, regardless who he played

Some interesting stats though...

Scored 4 of those test tons v WI in a 3 test home series in Pakistan
Against the might of Darren Powell, Fidel Edwards Corey Collymore and Jerome Taylor that series
(Scored 3 tons in England and 2 tons v India in Pakistan)

After that 2006 whopper year, he saw the light and became Wadey bound in the stats dept.
Played 17 more tests , 1,068 runs @ 34.45 - only 1 ton

Yeah agree

I think its our turn to play a ton of tests next year, if none are cancelled or postponed
Lets see how Smith or Marnus go if we end up playing 15-16 tests

If some of the English quicks weren't made of glass they probably do enough to get into the WTC final, think they only need another result in India to make it through, they rested Broad and Anderson after winning the first game

Rooty seems a bit too nice for the captaincy.

Good batsman though. Will probably get that century in this series. Every chance he will get up to the 13,000 run group with Ponting, Kallis and Dravid by the end of his career.
