Now before I come off sounding like a hypocrite, because I've sung many praises about Batista in the past, I will remind everyone that I am a big fan of Kane. You'll understand why I mention this if you keep reading.
I realised last night, in the main event between Orton and Batista, that the fate of Batista will be jaded. Currently he is very, very hot property and we're all dying to see how the Evolution thing will turn out. But even if Batista gets a run at the title, the chances of that run being any more than very short-lived are slim at best.
The fact is, Batista will wind up as another Kane. Certainly better than a midcarder, but never to be a consistent main eventer. The problem is his size and power. With guys like this, psychologically speaking, the expectation is for them to win and win well. It's exactly this reason that the best way for them to be used is to put over upcoming champions.
Consider the psychology of last night's main event. Batista is big, and strong, and aggressive. He spends a lot of the match beating the living shit out of Randy Orton. Now, against a midcarder, it's only a matter of time before we see a pinfall by the big man. But against a main eventer, and someone who needs to be really over at the moment like Randy Orton, it's not that simple. Someone good enough to be champion will miraculously take the beating and still kick out. They will survive. They will fight back and somehow get the win.
Just look at the majority of HBK's main events, that's basically how it goes. HBK does that kind of match better than anyone I've seen, which is how a relatively small man (I think he's 220 odd pounds) can consistently be a main eventer and even a champion for as long as he was.
Batista - the next Kane.
