The Search for a Dragons Home Ground

The Search for a Dragons HomeGround
From the very moment that St George became a 1st grade team in 1921, they had home ground problems. Hurstville Oval was unfenced and the club suffered financially. The move to Earl Park was a huge success and with that came success on the footy field.
The Dragons enjoyed their greatest years when they had home ground stability at Kogarah Oval. The move out of Kogarah led to years of failure but once back at Kogarah, the team once again found themselves contesting Grand Finals.
It now appears impossible that we can ever have a Dragons team at Kogarah Jubilee Oval, however, we have real chance to re-claim a home ground advantage in the St George district at Barton Park...pics from: http://stgeorgestadium.homestead.com/index.html

Sunday Telegraph, 22 July 2001: An article by Adam Hawse.
THE return of South Sydney to the NRL is set to force St George Illawarra out of the Sydney Football Stadium.
With the Rabbitohs and Sydney Roosters to use the SFS as their home ground in 2002, the Dragons are looking at alternative venues for their Sydney based matches. Among the options are the adjacent Sydney Cricket Ground, Stadium Australia and the Sydney Showground.
A decision will be made by the end of August.
"Souths arriving back has complicated things for us," Dragons chief executive Peter Doustsaid today. "We're just contemplating what other options there are."
The Dragons are not bound to a lease next year, allowing them to change venues if they wish.

Ultimately, the joint venture wants to play it's Sydney home games at the proposed BartonPark, a 20,000 seat stadium planned for Rockdale.
A return to their old home ground, Kogarah Jubilee Oval, is not an option.
Doust also ruled out the club playing all it's home games at WIN Stadium in Wollongong.
"We've made a commitment to play in Sydney and we believe it actually strengthens our organisation by playing two markets," he said. "Playing all games at WIN is not an option."

OK, it's just an article from the Telegraph and I take it with a grain of salt but it looks like at last the concept of StGeorge Illawarra being a team that also plays in the St George district may be a serious notion amongst club officials.

I urge all Dragons supporters and indeed supporters of Rugby League to do the following:

1.) A letter to Rockdale Council (Attn Mayor Peter Bryant) thanking them for their support in trying to bring the Dragons back to the StGeorge district through the proposed upgrading of the St George Stadium. rcc@rockdale.nsw.gov.au - Tell the Council that you support this community project.
2.) Another letter to the St George Leagues Club (Peter Doust and Robert Stone) asking for clarification on this demanding issue.
In particular, when will we see the Dragons playing their home games at the new St George Stadium?
I suggest the best way to do this is by fax. Fax: 02 9556 1175 but that's up to you.
Postal address: 124 Princes Highway Kogarah NSW 2217 Australia.
Or just send them an email.
The current vanguard for all of this is a fellow forum member who has a website:
St George Stadium Website:

By just sending a fax, letter or email, you can become part of the effort. I'm sure if we pull together, the Dragons will indeed have 'home ground advantage' once again.

Please post any suggestions or add ons here. Many Thanks.

OK, this discussion is gaining momentum at WORL forum but I'm about let it just stay there:

Here is a summary of email addresses we've gathered up.

Rockdale Council:
AttentionMayor Peter Bryantrcc@rockdale.nsw.gov.au
Cr Steven Hoyroyd: sholroyd@acay.com.au
Cr Chris Myles: cmiles@acay.com.au
NSW Govt:
Local member for Kogarah
Cherie Burton: zpaster@parliament.nsw.gov.au
St George Leagues Club:
Peter Doust: pdoust@dragons.com.au
Robert Stone: rstone@dragons.com.au

Please remember that these people actually support the concept of St George Stadium.
All we are doing is reminding them that we are also behind the idea.
When sending your message, remember the following 2 points:
1.) We support this community project.
2.) We want an update as to when the Dragons will again have a home ground in the St George district.

Be sure to keep your message to the point and keep it polite.

Go for it people. The Dragons will always succeed as long as the supporters do their bit as well.

Bigbopper,
And a bloody terrific footy stadium it is to.If it could be re-located and /or duplicated for the Dragons,I would not only vote for it ,but actively campaign for it.
I reckon it is the mould that should be used for footy grounds.
When I was there Mander robbed the Sts of a win,but at least it was a change from Harrigan.

Good luck you guys. I hope that you get a decent ground - you deserve one.
I used to love going to Kogarah but I guess we can't turn the clock back.
Cheers

MFC. Thanks for your input. I think if given the choice between Homebush or the SCG, most of us would take the SCG. But the fact is, it's a band aid solution.
For the life of me, I can't work why the only 1st grade RL venue between the City and Wollongong is stuck ina mozzie infested swamp at Woolaware.
IMO, there is only one solution for the long term and that is that Rugby League must have a Dragons home groundIN St George.

But while Barton is being built (fingers crossed), then Saints should play their Sydney games at the S.C.G. It was more or less their home ground in the 60's when they played every second Match of the Round there!

Cheers.

Shocking viewing from the SCG and a pupose built Football stadium is next door. I think we should take the Footy Stadium.

Last night on 2GB, Dragons CEO, Peter Doust announced that plans were now underway to build the new Stadium complex at Barton Park, Rockdale.
If all goes to plan, the Dragons will have a home ground in St George in time for season 2005.
These words were re-iterated in todays SMH:
....the news came as St George Illawarra chief executive Peter Doust outlined a proposed return to southern Sydney, with plans for the redevelopment of Barton Park already well under way.
St George soccer club is planning to construct a 20,000-seat stadium in the Technology Park precinct, near Sydney airport.
"If there was a ground there that met the NRL criteria, we'd definitely play there," Doust said. "At the end of the day a lot of people yearn for a local presence and the signs are looking good."
Plans have been drawn up and are awaiting development approval. Work on the ground is expected to take 18 months.
"If it happens, we've been told it would be ready for the 2005 season," Doust said.

A light at the end of the tunnel?

Not as bad as the fact that the only 1st grade RL venue between Sydney and Brisbane is at Gosford (and only used 6/7 times a year...).

Where is the money going to come from? Newcastle has been lobbying for funds for years with no result.

Regardless, Good luck Saints.

Thanks macavity. I was wondering if that was ever going to be picked up on.

The funding is always the sticking point.
We don't know but the St George Soccer club was reportedly lobbying the State Government...easier said than done I would think.

BTW, good to see you posting here.
