The worst thing about golden point

Aside from the fact that it actually exists - I'm not aiming to turn this into a bitch about golden point and suggest alternatives like golden try kinda thread, its been done to death.

But the tactics. Any sense of smart footy goes out the window. It's so frustrating to watch players try and force a field goal from 45m out under huge pressure, set after set. Knights did this 2 or 3 times last night and were predictably charged down, when a bomb to the corner would have put them in a great position.

Roosters have been huge culprits of this over the last few years with Pearce and Maloney and Carney (going back a few).

It's bad enough that League players are absolute trash at kicking field goals, they seem to lose all game sense once it hits golden point. Yuck!

If extra time is absolutely needed, just forget the golden point rule. Make it 10 minutes of high intensity point grubbing with right of reply.

So if you score a field goal, then you've got to defend it. If there's a controversial penalty 20m in front, take it but then defend it - at least refs won't feel as shy. If you score a try, then your chances of winning have gone right up - but you still have to defend it.

Golden point is arse and a bad advertisement for football.

I'll never understand the logic in a draw being an acceptable result after 90 minutes but not after 80

Either you want a result from every game and the golden point or what ever method goes on until a winner is crowned, or you seem a draw an acceptable result and at the end 80, the result is what it is.

Hokko is great at kicking field goals....we were just incapable of setting up a wall, and Fensom was standing 5m offside each time and didn't get pinged.

Too logical.

Always hated that the offside rule gets thrown out the window as well. A ref would too terrified to blow a penalty in golden point after raping the game with them for the previous 80

I was talking about this with someone last night. The right of reply. If we absolutely have to have extra time (and we don't), I think if a team scores in extra time, the other team should get one more set of 6 to try and reply. This would at least add some degree of fairness. At the moment it's terrible.

I understand why Golden Try may not work, but the above could realistically work.

My preference would be if they just scrapped golden point extra time and left it as a draw for regular season games and extra time for finals and origin.

But that will never happen so I say make it golden try.

The NFL has moved to a silver point or right of reply haven't they?

Close enough on the nfl, if a team scores a FG off its first possession, the other team gets a turn of possession to reply, a Touchdown ends the game period.

I wonder if they forget or if it's actually not coached. It's just insane to me how low percentage their plays are.

But if it was up to me I'd just get rid of it. This was a classic solution to a non problem. Draws during the regular season were always rare and they didn't hurt anybody.

The 7th tackle rule makes it worse. Each team is basically guaranteed a shot unless they drop it. It makes for very boring football.

You got that right!

Either scrap it or have 5 each way (not golden point), so teams can try & construct a try, instead of needing to go for a miracle play!

Scrap it totally. the odd points are good for separating the teams on the table.
But more importantly any kind of extra time used to be reseved for finals footy (where there has to be a winner) . Watching extra time in a semi final was a awesome before GP was introduced. Now its just another game.

Or be like how the Panthers avoided extra time by slotting in a FG before full time by Martin.

IMO,after all the preparation leading up to the game, and the actual 80 minute contest,I'd rather have gotten something out of the result with 1 competition point.

Especially if you're playing away from home were that one point could turn into three on the return home game,if applicable.

And one can refer to the Raiders current situation on the ladder. They lose that game and they are 6 spots on ladder worse off albeit a little early in the season.

Golden point is exciting. Just look at the TV ratings.
