Michael Vick, who was banned by the judge who sentenced him on dogfighting charges from owning another dog while on probation, says he misses being a dog owner and would like to have one as a pet someday.

“

My daughters miss having one, and that's the hardest thing: Telling them that we can't have one because of my actions.
” -- Michael Vick
The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, interviewed by NBC News and the website TheGrio.com, said he and his family miss having a dog. He said he wants to show people that he can be a responsible pet owner and that he would not take the opportunity for granted.
"I would love to get another dog in the future. I think it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process," Vick said, according to NBC News and TheGrio.com. The full interview was scheduled to be shown on TheGrio.com on Wednesday.
"I have been around him a lot, and feel confident that he would do a good job as a pet owner," Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday.
As part of Vick's probation, he can't buy, sell or own a dog. And some of his critics believe that arrangment should be permanent.
"Just as convicted pedophiles aren't allowed free access to children, anyone who is responsible for hanging, electrocuting, or shooting dogs and who causes them to suffer in other unimaginable ways should never again be allowed access to dogs," said Lisa Lange, vice president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "All things considered, it is a very small price to pay, especially compared to the suffering endured by the dogs who were abused and killed in the Bad Newz Kennels."
On Tuesday at a Philadelphia-area charter school, where Vick was speaking out against dogfighting, he was asked if he would return to the Eagles next season.
"I would hope so," Vick said, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "A lot of things have to happen. A lot of things have to take place. ... But hopefully I'm a Philadelphia Eagle next season."
Vick has led the Eagles to a share of the NFC East division lead and resurrected a career many thought was all but over after he went to federal prison for funding a dogfighting ring. The operation trained pit bulls to fight and killed dogs that did not perform well in training sessions.
Vick told NBC News and TheGrio.com. that he wants to show that that part of his past is behind him.
"I think just to have a pet in my household and to show people that I genuinely care, and my love and my passion for animals; I think it would be outstanding," Vick said in the interview. "If I ever have the opportunity again I will never take it for granted.
"I miss having a dog right now. I wish I could. My daughters miss having one, and that's the hardest thing: Telling them that we can't have one because of my actions," Vick said in the interview.

if this happens, it's an absolute joke.

Who cares.

He has done his time, he wants to prove he can care for an animal in the last stage of his rehab.

Why does this suggest he is doing anything else but going well.

He councils hundreds of kids and has been nothing short of an outstanding citizen of late.

He will be allowed to own dogs after 2012 anyway once his probation is finished.

Who cares. He wants to care for an animal and give a dog to his kids....

Whats a better look for animal rights...to have someone who wronged animals and then rehabbed to care and look after animals...or to be bitter bitches and not allow that person the chance to ever care for an animal again.

Looking like a bitter bitch looks worse. There are bigger issues in the world than this. People treat dog killing worse than someone killing another human. That is just puzzling to me. But here is a guy who is rehabbing and is trying to change the culture he was brought up in. How is that bad?

sounds like to me you dont think its as bad as killing a human. why not? They are helpless animals. This guy not only killed dogs, he tortured, electrocuted, made them fight for their lives etc.

Its not about what looks good. Its about a criminally charged animal abuser having the right to get his hands on another animal. To me this is insanity. Would you let a pedophile babysit your children? no way. Why should this guy who caused so much pain to so many helpless animals get another chance at this.

Also I'm so sick of the mentality that just because hes good at football again that everything he ever did is now redeemed. Makes me so godamn sick.

God bless pennywise, the one man in the world who has never made a mistake and had to ask for a second chance, a man who does not believe in second chances or rehabilitation ... god bless him.

What makes me so god damn sick is people who can't move on with their lives when it doesn't affect them.

Do you know Michael Vick personally? Do you know he still tortures dogs. Do you know the environment he was brought up in where it was seen as acceptable to do such practices.

Now he's been convicted, he has devoted his time to ensuring this culture is eliminated. PETA should be embracing him as wanting to help bring light to animal rights, rather than protesting everything and acting like little pussies.

No problem with him having a dog when he's legally allowed to, stupid of him to come out and say it, it's was always going to bring nothing but negativity his way.

Ok i guess you guys don't really care about animals.

On the issue of 2nd chances, he got a 2nd chance, he was freed from jail multiple years before he should have for what he did.

If he came and did to your pets what he did to these animals then you would hate this guy, but coz it doesn't affect you and hes throwing multiple touchdowns then hes a hero.

sorry for wasting your time on animal rights issues. This obviously isn't the place to bring it up. sorry for trying to force my opinion on everyone, it just reaaaally makes me angry that noone cares about stuff like this. I promise to keep it strictly football from now on.

I purposefully didn't post that article knowing the do-gooders would march out. And I freely admit I normally have time for the stuff Alfie writes, & no, I won't be pulling the whole thing apart but I will grab two points...

Would you let a pedophile babysit your children? no way. Why should this guy who caused so much pain to so many helpless animals get another chance at this.

I typed a huge diatribe in response to this. But upon reflection I figured if someone is willing to trivialise pedophilia for the sake of strengthening what is efectively nothing more than a moot point then it was no doubt just a waste of space.

Also I'm so sick of the mentality that just because hes good at football again that everything he ever did is now redeemed. Makes me so godamn sick.

Where is that EVER mentioned? Most sane people agree what he did was horrific & the fact he is playing well now has nothing to do with any part of redemption as far as I can see. In fact if he had of walked away from football altogether I doubt very much you would hear anything about this at all. Him playing well just means a more sensationalist headline for selling papers. I mean when was the last time they ran his charity work front page? (Other than when the Humane Society approached him to work for them.)

But where then do you draw the line on where his second chance starts/stops? And who decides on that line? I admire your strength of position in regards to the rights of animals, & while I believe wholeheartedly your intentions are just, I think the passion you have for this subject somewhat blinds your sensibility about it.

FTR Pennywise:

I recon the president of the humane society cares about animals, i dare a bit more than you or i, and i recon he's probably had a lot to do with Vick's rehabilitation, he says himself he spent a lot of time with Vick and has seen his true character... if he's comfortable with Vick's rehabilitation and change to the point where he believes Vick would be a good pet owner... who are you to say he isn't?

Well he is Penny...who gives a sh*t what every other sane person aside from what Penny and PETA think....they want their opinion followed and thats that. Didn't you get the memo?

And as for the quote that I obviously care more about about Human's being killed than animals...ummm yeah...does that make me a bad person that I care more about humans being killed than animals that get eaten around the world on a daily basis? I doubt that.

Do I want either to die...of course not.

But if I had a gun and got told you need to kill one of those either a person or a dog...the choice is pretty easy to me - but using your logic, you'll kill the human.

Geez Penny...I'd hate for you to go to Vietnam...or other parts of Asia...perhaps you'll get a shock that your little labby is sitting in a stew.

Maybe you should go to Malta, Italy etc because they kill little bugs bunny's to eat and put in stew as well.

Do you like Boxing or the UFC?...technically that's the same as dog fighting. Put guys in a cage and beat the sh*t out of each other. But you see nothing wrong with that I assume?.

So I'll revert the question back to you....do you place more worth on an animals life than a human...because it certainly appears that way.

Considering you were complaining about the 2 year sentence Vick got...as opposed to others like Dante Stallworth who was DUI and killed a guy crossing the road. And he got what...30 days prison? lol.

Double standards are crazy...and its all around the world...perception is reality and if enough people cause a stink then the punishment grows.

Vick has at least shown since his prison sentence has finished that he is capable of being an ambassador for animal rights and has been to numerous schools in troubled areas like where he grew up to stamp out the culture. But I guess actually contributing positively to society isn't enough.

I don't have a problem with it. I think he's changed and I highly doubt he would do that ever again.
