The Western Reds, South Queensland Crushers and North Queensland Cowboys are formally accepted into the 1995 competition.

25 years ago today and we are still trying to play catch up in getting two of those lost areas back into the comp!

The Super league 'peace agreement' was a farce! It has set the code back more than twenty years .

f**k ribot and his super League mercenaries

Yes. They were misguided. However backed by a very devious and still (hurting the code )organisation in News Ltd. It's a precarious situation rugby league finds itself in nowadays. The constrainment internationally and the containment of rugby league's premier competition being the hallmarks of News Ltd aims and efforts.

Drop sharks, panthers And manly and put in Souths, knights, Storm, tigers, CC and dragons and you’ve got the perfect 14 club competition that would have seen the game in a very different place over the last 20 years. If we could afford 16 ave. Two wildcard spots for two next best Sydney clubs.

The selection criteria was such a farce.

Yeh 97 the game was in pieces anyway, they should have took a blowrch to it then and really started from scratch keeping the National capital city footprint then deciding which Sydney clubs would be most valuable moving forward.

Superleague won the war, and we still pay for it today....thanks to clubs like yours ( both of them).

Absolutely. The whole presence of the "sudden requirement " to reduce club numbers was the fundamental mistake. And then the poor criteria complemented how wrong the aim was. It was a disastrous "negotiation" and so called "agreement".

You should be thankful, if reds had stayed with arl they might have been saved in 97 at the expense of a small suburban club playing out of a shthole.

And for the overall good of the game, maybe that wouldn't have been the worst option, in hindsight.

I guess by selling out so early, Perth didnt give themselves that option.
Shame.

The winfield cup was so awesome back then. The warriors and the rams would soon follow too.

If the Reds had stayed, there'd be no Storm. And it's not hard to see which area is preferred in terms of population and distance.
And a couple of bad seasons they'd have crowds you could count on both hands.
And you'd still blame these "sh*tty" Sydney suburban clubs, that helped you get there in the first place via Tv ratings and the money TV stations pay.
If the Panthers and Sharks had not gone to SL as last resorts, only one Sydney club the Dogs would have gone in and SL and the Reds may not have eventuated.

What is the anniversary date for Proud ARL clubs Newcastle selling out to Tinkler or ARL flagship Manly to the Penn family?

Did any non super league teams not completely sell out or merge?

Out of all the Sydney clubs to have jumped to superleague, the most dissappointing one was Bulldogs. They should have known better. A club being part of such a great and renowned league should have realised the mistake they were making. Bullfrog Moore stuffed up in this scenario. The younger clubs were clutching at straws probably taking note of the negative agenda pushed by the News Ltd press. Such a disaster.

St George & Norths were close to jumping. If that happened, things could’ve looked a lot different now. Not one Sydney SL club merged or got the chop
