I like this. If he wants to persist with Lui then putting him in at 6 makes sense, given that's where he plays. Gives him a bit more exposure without asking him to be something he's not... Can't see any reason to get Taumata out of the rack just because Benji's stubbed his toe.

Say what?

As I see it, Lui has two hurdles to overcome... 1) He's got no real first grade experience & 2) He's got no real experience as a half-back.

It makes sense to tackle these issues one at a time, not both at once.

Opportunity knocks...

Can i ask why Fulton is being played in the second row ?
He should be at lock and tackiling his ass off every week because thats all that he really offers.

I hope he isnt being turned into a wide running second rower or something because i cant imagine he would do to well at it.

As has been explained in other threads - he's playing on the right. Ignore his number.

Fulton is a better ball-player than Lui or Moltzen. From my perspective he's shown this under every coach except Sheens - playing at 5/8th under many, including Browny. Others said (and I've no idea about this) that he was ball-playing on the weekend.

For the imbos on here - that doesn't mean I want him to be our 5/8th, or that I think he should play for the Roos. Just that he's better than the other dribble.

Throw Taumata on an extended bench and I'm okay with the side. It's a trial, it doesn't matter if we lose, but it's good to see a few guys get experimented in different positions than the ones they played in the foundation cup.

Moltzen to halfback - 1 step forward
Fitzhenry starting winger - 1 step back
Lui still in the team - 2 steps back
No Taumata - 3 steps back

Still, that's progress for Sheens...

Moltzen has everything to lose from this arangement. Benji outside him gives him a proper shot ... this man Lui however (from what I saw at the SFS anyway), looks to be a nothing player. Not one aspect of his game looks anywhere near NRL standard. Plus at only 20 he's already blowing up - 3 weeks out from the season and he looks to be at least 5-7 kgs over fighting weight.

Oh dear ...

Happy to be proven wrong.

I didn't see it - give us a run down of how he played please.

I would like to see him get a shot on the bench based on some of the highlights of him. If he aint up to scratch, god help us if they put Benji back with Lui because we were directionless and were never really threatening in attack.

Hopefully Moltzen plays so well that he earns the jumper, although I dont know what more he could do other than help us to win every game he played there last year, and I agree with JasonL here, he's on a bit of a hiding to nothing playing next to Lui, it may give Sheens justification not to play him there against Manly.

Its not what i heard about the trial against the cowboys,, He was described as adding spark in the limited time he had. So keeping in mind Lui has been sh*t in at about 5 games he has played, who looks to have the most potential out of the 2 ?
Regardless of who Sheens picks it pisses me of why he changes players in 3 positions just because a player is injured in 1, he always does it!

Big difference.

That is the first time Arana had run with that side at all. He looked lost but at least put in the effort. That and the Balmain side was nowhere near full strength as players are still trialling for positions in the squad

There's two elements that Fulton offers that no other forward (except Ellis) offers - line running and ball playing. Now unfortunately, although he straightens the attack beautifully with his lines, he has limited impact because he's just not big enough. I was hoping he'd bulked up over the past 18 months, but after seeing him up close on Sunday he's still small for a forward - think Beau Ryan size. His ball-playing though offered a dimension our attack has been missing for some time - the days of our forwards passing before the line are long gone for the most part so it's nice to see that return. He is most definitely our best option on the right - as westie said, that's not to say there aren't better players out there, just none in our squad.

Leaving Ellis aside (who was hands down our best last week), Fulton was the best performed player on Sunday, followed by Flanagan. With two of Fulton, Gibbs & Payten on the field at any one time, our defence should be much improved again this year.

The problem with our back-row as I see it isn't Ellis on the left or Fulton on the right - it's Heighington in the middle. His impact running the ball is on a par with Fulton (read: ordinary), but his defence is nowhere near as good. I'm hoping he can step it up this year because he's a certainty to be selected every week, and we need far greater production from him if he's going to be playing 65+ minutes week in, week out.
