This Sunday at Leichhardt - Save LO Campaign

Hi all,

I'm just dropping by your forum to let you know about a campaign a few of us Wests Tigers supporters are running.

You will see people handing out petitions at the game on Sunday. I urge you to please take one and then at the end of the day, if you enjoyed your experience at Leichhardt Oval and would like to see first grade rugby league at the ground again in the future please help us out by signing it and returning it via the free, reply paid PO Box address on the flyer.

This is a campaign run by the fans and we like to think that having footy at Leichhardt is something fans from all NRL teams can benefit from. I'm sure you will agree, it is ground that stems from a dying breed of traditional rugby league ovals and we believe it should be preserved as a reminder of those great traditions when you can pack a picnic and sit on the hill as your team does battle only a few metres away.

If you are not interested, please don't read further as I'll only bore you..

We are gathering petitions to help lobby the State Government for some funding to get Leichhardt Oval upgraded so that games can be played there well into the future.

We are not talking drastic change but things like improving toilets and wheelchair access, laser levelling the field so other sports can use it, removing the derelict stands that have failed a structural adequacy report due to white ant damage etc.

We want to keep the ground in much the same style as it is now, only we want it to be brought in line with basic standards expected in 2004. The last upgrade the ground received was 30 years ago.

We have had a great response from fans from other clubs who have visited Leichhardt this season. It should be a great match on Sunday and I hope you enjoy the ground and the day, but not the result..

Thanks,

Anthony Sinclair.

the last of the great "suburbon ground"

A place with amazing character

Just a quick question for the Tigers supporters who read this, why can't they name the path which seperates the hill to the seats on the north side, the "the Laurie Nicholls Walk"

Just a thought.

Thanks for the support guys. Looking forward to a great match on Sunday.

We have named the tunnel after Laurie Nichols but i reckon he deserves the whole hill!

I've never been to Leichhardt but from the tele it seems like one of the best grounds to watch the league from.

Best of luck with your petition although I suspect we might have our hands full trying to save our team!!!!!

Laurie Nichols was a legend. I recently asked Mal Meninga how Laurie managed to were a the singlet in very cold conditions. Mal told me when Laurie was in England with the Kangaroos he used to smother himself in dencorub..
I interviewed Laurie on radio about a month before he died. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. "Wayne Pearce", he would say, "better bloke than he is a footballer". and that was saying something because he rated Wayne Pearce as a CHAMPION footballer. One of the BEST blokes ever Laurie, and it would be a fitting tribute to have the Hill named after him at his beloved Leichhardt Oval. Good luck. Laurie would be absolutely devastated at what is happening to League at the elite level.
My favourite Laurie Nichols sayin "Ellery eats celery"   What a legend
Thanks for reminding me about one of the codes great characters.

One of my greatest memories growing up was watching tv and as Balmain would score a try the camera would pan down to the sideline and there's old Laurie shadow boxing...it was funny at the time and the code needs more personalities like Laurie now more than ever

Back on topic: Good luck to you guys trying to keep Leichhardt going...I was there the night MacGaw went apeshit and started swinging at Meninga for no real reason, good ol' Sparkles was just trying to bring back the biff!!

Just wanted to thank the Eels fans who grabbed a petition off us on Sunday and will hopefully send them in to the free reply paid Po Box address listed on it.

It was a great day for Wests Tigers fans and I know it probably isn't one you guys will remember fondly but I hope you can appreciate the ground and its atmosphere from a rugby league point of view.

You guys are lucky to have a great home base at Parra Stadium and while our ground is not as modern, it is similar in that it is close to the action and built for rugby league. Please help us save ours!

Thanks and good luck for the rest of the season.

I too would like to thank the fans who grabbed signed some petitions as well, it is for a great cause and although some people might disagree I think its safe to say going by our response that the majority of fans do agree with one of the great Rugby League Ovals in the world getting a helping hand!

Thanks again the response has been huge so far!

Sorry, but Leichardt has got massive problems. Not in the ground itself, but it is really difficult to get to in terms of public transport, parking, and getting into and out of there as all traffic is jammed on Balmain Rd.

These things need to be addressed before the actual ground is fixed up.

Wests Tigers would be better off moving permanantly to Campbelltown.
Growing district, the ground is close to public transport, easier parking.
If they moved all their home games there, they could justify the funding to really do up Campbelltown Stadium.

The Tigers would then have 1 great home ground rather than 2 average grounds, and ensure their future.

it was a pleasure to help!!

lets hope Leichhardt council or the State Govt do help out! there is more to life than the resteraunt strip on Norton St.

The crowd on sunday reminded me of a Parra V Balmain match in 89 or 90 where we won in a close one, I believe it was the first match Tony Chalmers played for you guys against us and the bastard scored a try.

And where would that so called great home ground be out west???

I think if you actually listened to people Godfather you would be well in a decreasing minority!

Admittedly, parking and traffic in the region is not the best. Ideally public transport would be improved. I don't see much scope to improve the rest as its a well developed area. I'm lucky in that I know the good spots and have a hassle free run every time I go there but I appreciate there may be some locations where it is difficult to get home to.

I'm not going to enter the "move to Campbelltown debate" as its not what this is about. We are in support of the joint venture sharing games at both venues.
