Tigers get their man - Sheens (2 years)

WESTS TIGERS coach Tim Sheens is almost certain to finalise a new two-year deal with the Tigers within the next week after the club's board last night gave its backing to re-sign him.
The Herald understands that negotiations between chief executive Stephen Humphreys and Sheens are so far advanced that last night's board approval, the final hurdle in the way of a deal, means the signing of the contract is a formality, giving the Tigers a big boost before tomorrow night's clash with South Sydney.
Humphreys, who has been negotiating with Sheens since late last year, recommended the board re-sign the game's longest-serving coach, and the directors gave in-principle approval. Effectively, Humphreys now has board approval to finalise the deal, and, with Sheens having all but decided to extend his tenure with the club, it looks a done deal.
Sheens' signature will end the speculation surrounding his future and will ensure the players are settled and happy. Five-eighth Benji Marshall has played under only one coach in the NRL team and told the Herald recently he wanted the club to sign Sheens until for the remainder of his career. Marshall is contracted to the club until the end of 2015 but will be content, like the rest of the players, with a two-year extension for the 622-game coach, who was off contract at the end of the season.

Now just get Kevin Locke.

Well we all knew it was coming... Not a good time to be throwing the coach amongst the pigeons but jeeez, when are they gonna give me something to believe in?

I think he's had his time as head coach and should move in to a Jnr development or Coaching director role in all honesty.

Brownie FTW

The players that get into the good books with Sheens love him because they know they will never be dropped which isn't a good thing.

I'm thankful for where he's got the club, but going forward I just don't see him being a long term option.

Much as I disagree with some of his selections, the players unanimously are all behind him and considering they're at the coalface that's enough for me to back him.

This is hearsay. A couple of people suggested it, likely in jest and yet it has magically been transmuted into gospel.

Should we be surprised? All along since 2008-09 with the Longmuir debacle we have known Teflon knows more about managing the managers than the managers know about managing the coach.

I’ve been expecting the extension and have to admit I’m not against it but I have my reservations. I hope, but don’t expect, they have built in some agreed performance standards that can be used to sack Sheens if need be, if Teflon does not reach them over the next 3 seasons (I’m including this season as well). Have to be reasonably sure Folkes will go elsewhere now.

Positive:

Sheens has been instrumental in building and fostering a constructive and well regarded team culture and development program/s. He is held by the majority of the playing squad in high esteem and shows a great loyalty to ‘his’ players. He has created a competitive team and on their day Wests Tigers can be world beaters.

Negative:

He plays his favourites too often in both team selection and providing NRL grade opportunities ensuring there is a turnover of possible NRL standard players leaving the club for opportunities elsewhere. Has been urging the merging of the 2 State Cup teams (Balmain and Wests) into one- this goes against the spirit of the merge. Overly complicates plays on the field making it all but impossible for last minute additions to the team roster, who do not know the routine, to realistically participate. Refuses to address known weaknesses in the playing roster eg halfback (only possibly cured by luck rather than design), goal kicking (persists with a below average NRL standard kicker (Marshall), continues to undervalue specialist props by pushing second rowers into the position to speed up the game to the detriment of being able to create dominant forward pack.

Very well said.
