Time For Dave Taylor To Listen And Take Advice Of Critics Like A Man

IS THERE a bigger insult for a rugby league forward than to be described as looking like Tarzan and playing like Jane?

Probably not. Former Broncos forward Dane Carlaw copped it some years back after playing in a losing Queensland team and now Dave Taylor is on the receiving end after his inept display in Origin II in Sydney.

Carlaw had to take his medicine to some extent because the criticism came from a former Origin star, Greg Dowling, a noted hard man.

But Carlaw has proved himself a true warrior in a long career with the Broncos, Catalans in France and now Wynnum-Manly, where he is a workhorse, not a shiner.

Taylor was targeted by the Sydney media and made it clear after Saturday's win over Parramatta that they didn't matter.

"Most of them haven't even played reserve grade," Taylor told Fox Sports.

My late father-in-law never rode a horse in a race, but he knew the turf game backwards and his opinion was widely respected in circles in which he mixed.

Big Dave would become an even bigger man if he accepted that maybe he did let down the Queensland jumper last Wednesday, especially as he was given the honour of starting for the first time and coach Mal Meninga and captain Cameron Smith predicted big things from him.

One man who looks like Tarzan and plays like Tarzan and King Kong combined is Bulldogs prop Sam Kasiano, all 133kg of him.

Kasiano reminds me of former Great Britain prop Dennis Hartley who terrorised Australian packs in the early 1970s, his bulk proving a handful for defenders, while his ball skills created space for support players.

An Aspley junior, Kasiano was in the sights of the Broncos but the Bulldogs beat them to the punch.

Kasiano is in the sights of Queensland selectors as a replacement for Taylor in Origin III on July 4, although the last I heard he was leaning towards playing for New Zealand.

Origin III will bring down the curtain on the representative part of the season - almost - with a trans-Tasman Test in Townsville in October the last event.

Thank God for Origin now that the days of big international tours are gone.

To have a decider in such a quality representative competition is something AFL can only dream about.

I recalled some of the great league Tests as Wales looked certain to take their series against the Wallabies to a decider, only to be denied by a last-minute penalty goal.

In 1992 Mal Meninga captained Australia to a 16-10 win over Britain in the decider at Lang Park. It was a torrid affair and no one shirked their duty. I am sure the same will apply on July 4. The "cauldron" is no place for Jane.

It seems that some people want Taylor to stop doing what makes him a special player. They want him to play like a Gallen or a Thaiday. I don't think he's ever going to be able to play like those guys and if he tries he'd just be a pale imitation of them. But Gallen and Thaiday can't really play like a Taylor either. These stories are never going to stop for Taylor, but I hope he never listens to them.

He's having his best year ever at club level and was far from the worst Maroon on Wednesday. If it wasn't for his impending rep retirement, Petero wouldn't have been picked. He's been by far the worst Queensland forward over the two games.

They would make an even bigger mockery of state of origin if they put Kasiano in there.
Im not even talking about the fact that he is a kiwi.

Dave Taylor might not have had the best game in Origin 2 but thats one poor game all season.

Who is Kasiano"? He only just burst onto the scene.
'What happened to loyalty at QLD?

Taylor has been great for us. Like to see Dave in origin 3. But happy to have him against the panthers.if the maroons are drop a player poor old Petro should be first cab off the rank. If there was a case of one year too long he defines it. Which is a shame.

Taylor To Prove Doubters Wrong: Sutton

John Sutton has backed David Taylor to show Queensland what he is all about when South Sydney take on Brisbane on Friday.

Taylor was castigated following his quiet performance in the Maroons' State of Origin defeat to NSW with former great Greg Dowling calling for the 124kg giant to be dropped for next month's decider.

Taylor bounced back from the Maroons' 16-12 defeat with a barnstorming display for Souths in the Saturday's 24-6 NRL win over Parramatta.

However, there's been speculation Canterbury's in-form New Zealand-born prop Sam Kasiano would be chosen ahead of Taylor for game three in Brisbane on July 4.

But Sutton believes Taylor will step up again for the fourth-placed Rabbitohs when they take on the Broncos, who sit third, at Suncorp Stadium.

"I am sure playing up in Brisbane against some of his Queensland teammates will fire up both Dave and GI (Greg Inglis)," said Sutton.

"He didn't have the best night in Origin two, but he played really well for us against Parra and, hopefully, he can have another big one for us on Friday."

Taylor hit out at his critics in the media following the win over the Eels, saying they were not qualified to judge his performances.

But Sutton said the 23-year-old has not been any different around his Souths teammates and that any criticism does not affect him.

"I don't think he reads into it too much," Sutton said.

"He doesn't really care what's said about him and, hopefully, he can rise to the occasion in Brisbane again."

Inglis will be fit to face the club he snubbed to sign for Souths in 2010 after sustaining ligament damage and hyper-extending his elbow against the Eels.

Sutton said the in-form Queensland star was showing no signs of discomfort and would be fit to play.

"He seems fine, I've not been told he's going to be out and I expect him to be in the team," he said.
